Default 911R - A Legend Is Born

I have been following Porsche since I was a child (yes, I did have one of those Turbo posters) - but never over the past several decades have I felt something, something that is very hard to put into words, as I feel about the R. Yes, there have been some issues relating to allocation and to colors, and, yes, some have criticized it as being only a collection of parts, albeit great parts. But, putting all of that to the side, what has been created is magic, something one rarely sees in any car, and it is not a matter of cost, be it high or low; this car sings, it sings like the Rolling Stones at their best and its design, makes me think of the work of Raymond Loewy. Gosh, I wish I would be allowed to drive, because this R is wonderful.

Every Porsche enthusiast should have an R in the garage. Oh wait...

I agree, very few modern Porsches have captured my imagination like the R.

The R does signals a good turning point for Porsche and 911s in general. As Andreas Preuninger has mentioned, we'll see more of the R in future 911s. Music to my ears!

I had to look up the Raymond Loewy reference:

I had the opposite reaction to the R, I was disappointed by the lack of anything new, nor real weight reduction in easy areas - e.g. lightweight door cards vs still having the full door pockets/speaker mounts. Really turned me off the brand and future direction.

I am a sucker for houndstooth seats, therefore I am a fan. The fact there is a new Porsche attached is icing on the cake.

The R has hit the sweet spot for some for sure. The "niggly" issues you mentioned allocation etc. are actually a very big deal for many of us. Time will tell if it ends up in great pantheon of rare and original Porsche designs. Personally, I am a one car guy simply out of monetary restrictions! That said, I would never put this car in front of most any RS version regardless of year. Just me. As a second car? for sure. As many of us have said, the key to this car is the exclusivity not necessarily the originality of it's design. Glad you dig it though!

The R was conceived for a purpose very different from that of the RS.

Robert: make you deal. I'll take you for a spirited rip in my RS if you let me do the same for you in your R 😎

I am starting to warm up to it, but visually it doesn't hold a candle to the GT3.
