my general feeling about towing....... the more *** you have in the front the better control you will have of your rear if things get dicey. We have towed multiple trailers with equipment, bobcats, tractors, trucks, cars and have nearly exclusively used 2500 or 3500 diesel trucks. Can t beat the torque especially in towing with elevations, our most recent is equipped with trailer brake controller and exhaust brake. And the big advantage is decent mpg s with much fewer stops to refuel. Our denali interior is miles ahead of trucks from even a decade ago, i don't think even the cayenne driver will be disappointed.
my wifes gl350 is a nice suv tow vehicle(same lines as q7 tdi) and has decent gvwr.
I have also had experience towing with my 3500 mb sprinter. A very small diesel but good gearing and weight along with a long wheelbase make for great towing. can keep all your gear locked away and tow a lighter open trailer.
point is, in most cases with a cautious defensive driver, who is aware of increased stopping distances ect. you will do fine with an suv, but for the 1% of the time where someone stops unexpectedly or you have to make evasive maneuvers, the bigger and heavier the tow vehicle, the more likely you will maintain control.

My Touareg's have towed an enclosed haulmark 20 with car for >10k miles.
Diesel gets better mileage than the gas. Not quite as good as the Tundra was, but I couldnt get kids and dogs in that. Plus the VW gets 2x the gas mileage...

towed with a 8.1 L Big Block 2500 Suburban
only two tanks additional gas needed than running without trailer from Fl.>R.I
open trailer is easy to be aware of all that's going on behind you .
Mods= trailer with drop axles and 14' tires , 2x12 with stop bolted down to deck under front tires allows for door to fully open over
fender with FRONT LIFT UP ON car
electric brake controller in Suburban key , low cog, zero swing factor, running 80 up hill np
Starter package !

[QUOTE=reidry;12424311]A trailer and tow vehicle is just the next part of the obsession (aka disease).
This a malignant disease. I honestly thought the end of this story if when you get a dream car and wait the day you die. Now, what trailer to use? Then what, buying a CUP car? And there are so many withthis disease.

Its official. I am getting a trailer. I just called another shipping company to move my GT3 and they are asking me $995 for a 350 mile trip. So about $2000 per year. I have 2 cars to move yearly, so it adds up to $4000/year.
A decent open trailer is about $6000 plus options. Makes sense to me.
Thanks for all your input guys. For my limited tow vehicle, I went to Trailex which is the lightest for an aluminum trailer, 900 lbs.
