What people don't see when your car is parked or driving is your post history on a public discussion forum. If someone was attempting to use social engineering on you, your license plate number (plus all the other personal information people share here, like location, house pictures, favorite roads, etc.) is just another piece they have to use against you.

Most people here are probably diligent enough day-to-day that their license plate numbers can't be used against them. The fact remains, however, that there is no drawback to blurring/covering the number and no reason not to do it, unless you just have to take your pics directly from your phone to the internet.

Not that it won't happen in the future, but you can't search for text that appears in an image embedded in a web page. (You can use OCR software to convert a scan to text, but the scope of that is completely different than analyzing every image on the web for text).
