Noticed mine was doing the same thing with the lack of a gap. Inspection of the mesh revealed that there was a gap between the thin bumper piece and the mesh. Pushing down on the thin bumper piece connects with some type of sticky backing, but then releases shortly after, closing the gap.

My dad's car has no gap between the mesh and the bumper.

I have never bottomed out and I suspect the adhesive used to hold the mesh failed. I'll stop by the dealer tomorrow and see what they think.
