I think this is making a good case for covering windshield if tracking. Two track events is not much - many owners I know do 10-30/year. My film (not clearplex, some more generic stuff from 3M) got bad after about 18 months and 25+ track events. Was $250 with installation. It never was perfectly clear, but until recently was almost unnoticeable during daytime. It always had halos at night though - somewhat annoying. One thing people forget is that these coatings are way more porous than glass, and thus they become much more clear with some sealant (I tried 3M and Zaino with good success).

And film definitely improves crack resistance by a huge margin - it's not as hard as glass, so it acts as a cushion. Even thinnest plastic film on glass would improve impact resistance dramatically.
