I find the column mounted paddles less awkward as you always know where the upshift and downshift paddles are, as they do not move with the wheel.
And therefore aren't where your hands are. Sorry I don't get it. Seems crazy to me that would be a preference.

For street I would prefer column mounted. In a race car, steering wheel for sure because my hands never leave the 9 and 3 positions. For track days, a manual, but if I must then either wheel or column with my preference based mostly on the implementation of the shifters more so than where they are actually mounted.

Like others have said. That's what is used to be, not anymore with PDK/DCT.
