Just received the 918 Spyder brochure package

One important consideration is the target market for the 918... How many of these guys take their Enzo/Veyron/FlaF/P1/Pagani/etc to the track for a few laps? How many only own 1 of the above? The new hypercars I believe will crush the 918 on the track, in the mags, etc... But the 918 is cool. For guys who have a bunch of cars, who have all the cool cars, it will be very interesting because it is cool. It will serve largely as a brand / design instrument for Porsche - helping to promote hybrid technologies for future use, likely including 911, boxster, etc...
Also, what were sales like on the CGT when it was launched? Target number vs actual sales, and the time needed to sell-out? I thought I remember that car selling on the slow side, and it was awesome, and remains awesome today...

Who knows what will really happen with the 918 Spyder. Porsche seems to think they need a full model cycle of the thing till the 960 (961?) should be brought to market, circa 2017, and the stack of marketing they send suggests they're trawling far and wide to find prospective buyers. For any buyer to whom a million bucks is irrelevant, by all means, give it a whirl and just park it at a dealer showroom on consignment if it's not worth keeping. I think the cash rich have been scorned by Ferrari and they're nowhere near the elite few getting the La Ferrari, so they should all get the P1. If they're already getting a P1, then maybe look at the 918 once it's available to drive and be sure it's . Then work on a discount of about 20% and when driving it on the track, just try not to get passed by too many guys in 991 GT3's ... : |

Road and Track surveyed it's readers on which car would they choose if given the choice:
Porsche 918
La Ferrari
McLaren P1
New Lambo
The 918 received 52% of the total votes! Was a bit surprised by this - but really like the styling and the engineering concept.

I got the issue today and really can't believe the Porsche won by a significant margin. My preference is the P1.

Just to make sure we didn't cross wires:
Road and Track, July 2013, page 18 article titled "Which Do You Choose" pic of 918 Spyder in Martini livery in the lower right. Dude, if you can't see it, you either need a better perscription or the mailman tore it out of the mag!

I've remained silent on the 918 for reasons both personal (I wasn't sure whether I even liked the concept) and professional (had to turn down three chances to get close to the car due to the timing of a job change).
Now having driven a prototype, I think it may be the most misunderstood production Porsche yet. It's going to be very interesting to see how it does once it hits the market.
