Cup 2's in cooler weather
It has been a ****ty, rainy week in Houston and I've spent four days of it flat on my *** with the flu, but i'm feeling around 75% and tomorrow looks like a nice day to go for a long blast in the GT3 before football cranks up. The temps look relatively chilly for us, probably around 40 when I leave the house. I've got 35 miles of freeway before I hit the twisty stuff, so I'm thinking the tires should be good and warm by the time I really need them. I was pretty comfortable knowing how hard to push them on my GT4 in cool temps, but the GT4 was a pussycat compared to the GT3. Any thoughts?

As long as it is dry it should be mostly ok but I would not push too hard either. I had a run recently where is was below 40 and still pretty wet in the bay area. You can break traction very easily in these conditions.

I drive mine in high 30s and they're fine (Dunlop on my .1 were horrible) but one day I found myself in light cold rain and the car was ice skating, the rear had zero grip every time I turned (25mph), not fun. Michelin says there is a risk the compound will crack if over heated and then left in 30 degrees.

OEM tires struggle under 55F. Just be very cognizant of their low grip.

I'm driven mine in the 30s. Leave traction control on. You'll be fine.

Dangerous to run those in the winter. At the very least, get your set of Pilot 4S for the cold months. Still far from optimal but they will stop you in a much shorter distance. Asking for trouble running Cups in cold weather.

I think as long as the roads are dry, you should be fine. Cold temps aren't as much a problem as wet roads.

^^^I used to think the same... until I needed to make an emergency stop. It was cold and perfectly dry. I wasn't even driving too fast. The car slid as if I were on ice. Eye opener, indeed.

Had similar conditions in the Bay Area this weekend - high 30's / low 40's in the morning, but dry. Car was very skittish yesterday morning in the low 40's and improved noticeably as temp warmed into the high 40s and 50s. Still driveable in those temps, but take it easy.

Race Car
I had my 991.2 GT3 out a couple weeks ago when it was about 38-40 degrees and EASILY broke the rear tires loose under maybe 1/2 throttle acceleration after a turn...I caught it easily (this car is very forgiving) but even when you think the tires might be warm and the TPMS says the pressure is going up...be careful.

I literally just pulled in from a "spirited" drive. It is currently sunny and 39 but the curvy/hilly roads near here are fairly shaded. My 4Ss showed 27/29 on TPMS when I started up. After a few easy miles in the curves, they were warmed up to 29/32. There were a couple times when the back end surprisingly stepped out when I added gas - in areas where I never get that same issue when it is warm out. Thank goodness for the nannies... Based on my experience with the 4Ss, there is no way in hell I would take a spirited drive in the cold (or in the rain) on Cup 2s or Maxx R2s (my OEM).

I’ve been thinking to move to the PS4S and was surprised to read your post. Did you drive in cold rain yet?

Yes, but I must admit that I drive like a granny in the rain - cold or warm. I have a Jeep Wrangler and a Mercedes GL 4-Matic for the cold rain. But, when I first got the car, I drove the Maxx Race 2's in the cold rain one time. It was literally like being on ice. 2000 RPM max...
We took a Taycan Turbo S out in the cool rain yesterday. Not sure what tires were on it, but it did a complete disappearing act when the go-pedal was mashed...
