Default Help! Brake rotors and pads replacement

Hi All

I need your help/opinon here.

I bought a 2015 GT3 a couple of months ago. I think the brake may need replacement. I just got aftermarket rotors and pads for the 991.1 GT3 online. I contact a few local shops, but none of them will install parts provided by the customers. I found a shop that will, but they quoted 2.5 hours for each corner, total 10 hours to install all 4. Is that normal?

If anyone here knows a good shop that can do the job in Chicago area, please let me know. Greatly appreciate your help.

I have not had this done, but 2.5 hours per corner does not sound outrageous.

Do you just need pads or pads and rotors? Whose after market parts did you buy, what brand?

Girodisc for the rotors and Hawk for the pads

I watched a couple of Youtube videos of someone replacing them. It took about 40 minutes for the front right corner.

10 hours seems too long to me. Didn't take that long to install surface transforms rotors and pads on mine, and that included the spacer for the front calipers. At least they didn't charge me for 10 hours.

What do you think a job like this should take, Grant? 5 hours?

I think an experienced shop could do it under 5 hrs, but I wouldn't balk at a 5 hr bill...

Should include fluid flush and time for monkeying with the center-locks

I am with Grant, way too much time. I can easily do this in 45min a corner. Giro disc come with hats and you just need to remove the old and slap on the new. I would plan to replace your brake fluid after you do the install. 5 hrs for all the work should do it. If you have any mechanical skills you can easily do it yourself, take the money you save and invest in a few tools for future jobs.

I talked to a few more Porsche specialized shops. They gave me more reasonable estimate. 4 hours to 5.5 hours. But price varies. $450 to $1100. The labor rate is very different. One shop charges $100/hour. one charges $160/hour.

10 hours is nuts. Call Alex at Performance Eurowerks in Buffalo Grove and he'll take care of you.

I changed the front rotors and pads on my 987 Boxster and it took me 2.5 hours.
I am very slow at this. But rears will require more time as the handbrake adjustment is required.
Tops 4 hours for a professional.

2.5 hours max to install girodisc rotors, pads, and caliper studs. I've done it 3 times and about to do the same on my 991.2 GT3 RS. Keep in mind that a shop has overhead (rent / equipment / education), salaries, insurance, benefits, etc. So don't think of it as quoted hours... think of it as cost.

Who did you call already, that said "no"?

Chicago is a big town. Where exactly would be convenient for you?

Is there more to this story? Why do you “think” you need new brakes? I know when I need brakes by measuring the pads and rotors. No offense, but it’s sounds like you’re in this weird grey area where you’re diagnosing your own car, but not competent enough to fix it.
