Default Porsche 987 intermediate loss of power.

Hi,

I own a Porsche 987 (3.2) S 2005, just wondering if anyone has had the following symptoms? and if so has also found a solution; :-)

Just recently while driving my car, i lose power for 1 or 2 seconds and then the power comes back in. This happens usually once every 30 miles. There is no pattern and this happens intermittent every 30 or so miles. Other than that the car drives beautifully. I have owned the car for around 8 years. The car has completed 130k miles (mars and back). The car has a Full Porsche service history.

I did take the car to the local Porsche specialist at the weekend (Precision Porsche. They plugged the car into their computer and could not find anything, they also drove the car on a test run 30 miles and for them the gremlin did not occur.) Bugger!

Anyway i've been driving the car for the last 2 months with this issue; every time i take the car out for a drive the same thing happens. I lose power randomly for 1 or 2 seconds on a 30 mile run.

Can anyone help? Or give me some advice?

Many Thanks

Michael

Side Quick Question: Could this be related; What is the life span of Cat Converters on a 987? How do you tell if they need replacing?

I suspect it could be a electrical issue like a failing alternator, failing MAF, Fuel pump, or O2 sensor.

It's not the cat converter.

You lose electrical power or engine power? You need to clarify.

I have 987.2 & mine does the same thing. Usually from low rpm under full throttle it seems to run at 50% power only, then a second later or so, it's back full on. It happens very rarely but frequent enough for it to be noticed.

Maybe get something like a kiwi 3 OBD reader combined with an app like dash command that can record all the live data.

Record every time you drive and note the time when the hiccup occurs.

Reviewing the data should help pinpoint the problem or the running conditions that cause it.

With that kind of mileage, and the age, it could be any number of things. I would start with the simple suspects, like the MAF, or distributor. As MrMoose suggests, try to be more specific - do you lose all power (lights, radio, etc.) or is it just engine power that goes bye-bye?

Hi, I had a problem with my engine just dropping to idol for a second, if I lifted & then planted again it was fine, at it's worse it was happening every 10 miles or so. I looked on here & wasn't any help, so now I know what it was, here's the answer

Change your petrol station, although they claim it was super unleaded there was something wrong with it. 2 re-fills else where it was better, 5ish re-fills and it never happened again so I forgot about it until now

it would be nice if it was the throttle-by-wire rheostat attached to the throttle pedal. ...an easy fix. and you might want to use your phone to record a drive showing the tach and the drop in power. just to give a mech a reason to believe you. ...sometimes they need a little nudge.

What? Why would it be nice to be a fault you had to pay for? It's just fuel, 4 years and no one explained the reason, I join this site yesterday, just to help people out and you reply with this rubbish. I'm deleting my account, I'm not having special people like you winding me up

Yea... people are so sensitive these days even when offered free advice. More reason why I never wanted to deal with people and cars for a living.
