If it passes the sniffer test why does CARB reject it. Is it because their computers see that the engine doesn't match the VIN?

And yes, the BGB guys do top notch work. One of my track friends purchased a 981 race car they built and loves it.

"If it passes the sniffer test why does CARB reject it."

Short answer is because this is California. Logic and common sense have nothing to do with the system here. I went down the rat hole that is CA DMV with an A/C Cobra I built. Not enough space here to tell the long version of my 6 month saga. I ended up selling the Cobra, same as what nmartin58 is doing.

Sold my import when I moved to CA. CARB is no joke. Basically don't modify your car in Cali.

Tailpipe doesn't matter.
I work in an office bldg with a bunch of St.of.Cal. workers. I heard the following conversation today in the elevator:
"Can you imagine what would happen if we lost our shared drive?"
"Why?"
"We would lose all our work!"
"We don't DO anything though."

Yep. California is crazy. I've tried everything I could think of and Vision Motorsports has tried. No luck.

So looking to sell or trade. It sucks because the car is so much fun to drive.

The issue was that we started life with a 2.9L 987.2 which is an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle engine. The 3.4L and 3.8L motors are NOT and when this was brought to the attention of the smog place they flagged the vehicle. Had we started with a 3.4L 987.2 and went to a 997.2 3.8L it would have passed. I spent hours and hours and days working with the tuner to turn back on all readiness monitors and then spent time driving the car to make sure they were all on. It's a shame because the car originally came from California.

Maybe Bosch could help. They seem to have found a way to enable VAG Diesel vehicles to get past emission testing. :-)

That's a more understandable reason for the rejection. I would have hoped the REF would have given it a pass given the sniffer, but CARB.

Montana LLC and registration like supercars do... except this wouldn't be for tax savings.

Do you have customers in California that have passed inspection when they started with 3.4L?

I can't speak for John at BGB but I believe after spending 6 months dealing with my car that if it was a 3.4L we would have been able to get it passed.

Sounds like too much government bureaucracy in CA. They are not allowed to think, or they would look at the sniffer test and say it passes. Once government reaches a certain mass, its very hard, if not impossible, to make any cuts.
Sounds like a great car. I'd be interested if back in a Macan Turbo again (in place of my 991.1 C2S) and also had that needed 3rd car space in my garage.

Not sure. But I thought going with a reman 3.8L would be easier.

The car turned out great. Its unfortunate that I now have this issue.

I have an '06 Cayman S. Original engine and trans etc. It's got 111K on it. Lots of goodies. Runs great, looks good, handles amazingly well. I could spend money on an IMS, maybe bearings etc to prolong the life or I could try a swap or rebuild. This care would actually be a great candidate for a swap like this. I live in IL.

How far has this swap gone? Does this car have the 3.8L installed or is it just the doner car?

If it's not done, would it make more sense to use my car for the swap?

If it's done, could this car pass emissions in IL?

If I bought it, would you be interested in my car as a donor for another swap?

I'm not sure, from all the photos vs the original description, exactly what you're selling.

email me at tbrown at capseal dot com.

Thanks!
