2006 987 Pre-purchase Advice

Hi everyone -
I'm a longtime Porsche fan that has never had the opportunity purchase one (I'm still trying to forget about the 1978 euro spec 930 I could have bought for about $7500 about 18 years ago) - until now. And I'm looking for a little advice.
I have the opportunity to pickup a 2006 987 with 35,000 miles. Service records show that it went in for a "ticking noise" at 29,000 miles in April 2013. The dealer said it was a valve lifter noise, recommended an oil/filter change and a recheck in a few hundred miles. The car was never rechecked and the noise is still there. I'm not that concerned about this as it seems to be a common occurrence in these cars, though I may be more concerned after driving it. Currently, it has a CEL for "catalytic converter inefficiency." I don't have the exact CEL code, but for the price I could replace the catalytic converter and O2 sensors and still be getting a hell of a deal.
My concern (and the gut feeling I'm getting that I may be missing something) is that the dealer had it listed for $25,000 for about 2 weeks and just dropped the price to $19,500. Has anyone had any experience with a "catalytic converter inefficiency" CEL and what it took to clear it?
If anyone could give me a little advice on what they think about this opportunity I'd greatly appreciate it.

That ticking noise may be a scored cylinder. You might want to get a borescope on every cylinder, and inspect the oil/filter. Do a search for bore scoring on here for more info.

Lots of red flags on this "deal". Find a good Porsche Mechanic and get a thorough PPI done.
These cars can be quite costly to fix, so super important to be cautious. Sometimes it's better to pay a bit more and find the right car than to grab a deal and suffer the consequences.

I would walk away from that car without even spending money on inspections. Spring/summer is when dealers RAISE prices on sports cars in inventory. There is probably a known problem to warrant a 20% price reduction during peak selling season.
