Default Need a little help in picking a 986 or 987

Not sure if this section is the best place to ask the question or if it would be better suited in the 986 sub-forum.

I have decided to look for a second car to drive just for fun. I have been looking at BMW M Roadsters and Porsche Boxsters. Since I have owned five BMWs I am comfortable with them, but I love the look of the Boxsters.

One, and only one hesitation…all that I read about the IMS issue. This is giving me real hesitation. And, since I cannot afford a 2009, I know I need to be concerned. When I started my search I decided I would cap my spend at $15,000. Well, it didn’t take long to figure out that isn’t going to happen with a Boxster.

After a lot of soul searching this weekend, I have decided that I like the look of real sporty cars, but do love comfortable seats. Might be why I upgraded my 550i with 19” M5 wheels and M5 body skirting, while opting for the optional Comfort Seats of a 550i.

So, after listening to all that here is what I am trying to decide which model would be the best choice for me.

2003 or 2004 Boxster S - Great look, bigger engine.
OR
2005-2006 Boxster - More plush looking interior, but not the look or power of the S.

Don’t care if it is tiptronic or manual. Can be any color other than silver. I know, lots of people love silver.

Appreciate suggestions and why.

I owned a 2003 base Boxster that I really loved. Big difference in Tip & Manual. You really need to make sure you want an automatic sports car. If it just going to be a fun car then I would get the manual as its more driver involving and that is why you are buying it in the first place.

one of the biggest things for me was the increase in size of the car. My head was above the roll bar in the 986, not really something that you want.

the 987 base has the same HP as the 986 S, it is plenty on the roads

Basic rule of thumb...buy the newest, lowest mile car you can afford.
