Default 9A1 motor

How can I tell whether or not my 08' RS 60 Boxster has a 9A1 motor?

As I recall, the 9A1 motor was first utilized in '09 model year cars.

The RS60 doesn't have it. The 9A1 was used in the 09 and newer Boxster/Cayman.

So here I was thinking that IMS issues were not a concern for me, but it looks like I should be concerned after all?

They did make some changes to the engine in mid 2006. So your engine will have benefitted from those changes, which hopefully reduce the chances of an IMS failure.

In addition, for all the posts you read about them, there are still tons of 986s and early 987s on the roads.

I don't know about 2006 models, but they DID make changes in the '07s. The '08s are pretty much carbon copies of the '07s.

I don't know if I have heard of *any* problems with the '07-'08 models, but yes, those cars have a product-improved IMS.
