Yes, I recognized the international vehicle registration code on your plate. I lived in Paris for two years in the 1970's and I am familiar with the country ID system which predates the current European Union front & rear license plates like yours! Back then, we needed a country ID sticker or badge on the rear of the car to go across a border with our standard national license plates (e.g. France). Each country has a code. Yours is 'P' since 1910. Poland is 'PL' when it was given a code in 1921. Since 'P' was already taken up by Portugal by that date, they were given 'PL'! And so on for most other countries!
I collect automotive memorabilia. And I have quite a number of these old country coded ID badges used before the current EU license plates seen on your car! See the wall on the left on the enclosed photograph!

One thing i can notice very often is that Americans sometimes dont even know what/where is Portugal...
