2009 Cayman S with 3.8L Conversion - Dyno Results - 450+ HP
Well folks...the long wait is over and the numbers are official. By taking our existing Grand-Am Cayman package, dropping in a DFI 3.8 and flashing the ECU we were able to break any horsepower and torque records previously achieved. By sending out the cylinder heads to get a valve job and porting, we were able to shatter any previous horsepower and torque numbers. Results as follows:

BGB/RSS Tuning DFI Pulley Kit
Dyno Results at the rear wheels on our Dynojet:
Stage 1 (as raced in Grand-Am) (stock): 3.4L DFI 987.2 MA.121C Engine: 340 horsepower and 272 lb/ft. of torque at the wheels
3.8L DFI 997.2 MA.101 Engine (stock): 385 horsepower and 299 lb/ft. of torque at the wheels.
3.8L DFI 997.2 MA.101 Engine WITH PORTING AND VALVE WORK: 405 horsepower and 311 lb/ft. of torque. The latest and greatest iteration which is our own attempt at a DFI 997 GTS engine produces crank horsepower on a Cayman of 458 and crank torque of 355. Eat your heart out Cup cars!

Congrats on the transplant and results. Curious how the car feels with what many think should have been installed in the car in the first place.

Power is excellent, nice and linear - 360 RWHP and 290 Lb-Ft of Torque (unfortunately we now need to dial it back for class the weight/hp limit).
Overall it makes the Cayman an evey more amazing car

We installed a M97 3.8 in the Gen 1 race car and it feels great. Added torque makes the car much more forgiving in traffic.

Kind of sucks that you can't enjoy the full benefits of the upgrade - would the full-power 3.8 make you competitive in another class?

Not a big deal really. The car is plenty fun.
No, the car is too heavy for the next class up. Would need to spend mega bucks taking weight out and be stuck racing with 997 cup cars. Already running against older 996 cups.

The aftermarket 3.8 option is there for folks who want it (very small percentages of buyers I suspect) and BGB, Vision, and others are ready to make it happen.
We made this change to run a specific race class (needed more TQ), not because the car was slow.

Did you blueprint and upgrade the components (e.g. connecting rods, etc.) on the 3.8 motor? Are the connecting rods (and bolts) on the 3.8 the same as the 3.4?

The rod and rod bolts appeared to be the same type. Howeverl, they are not the same rod as the 3.8 has a longer stroke and therefor a longer rod.
