Default 987.1 and 987.2 Cold Air Intake Sounds - TOO LOUD?

Ladies and Gents,

I tried posting this on another Cayman forum. Who here thinks this is too loud for the interior? Obviously this is an application meant for track use but is there anyone here that would be offended by something like this?

This is windows up, Sport Plus On, but wide open throttle at 100%. The intentions are to silence a lot of this at or below 4000 RPM. In order to get a larger filter in, a lot of the sound deadening and duct work material had to be removed. Thoughts?

Too each his own, but I like it. Can you do a vid of a normal take off?

Yes sir. The car is bone stock. That aggresive howl is solely from the intake swap. I took the tech that designed it for the race car for a ride so we could find ways to quiet it down and he concluded that the reason our in-car video is so loud is because with that setup, it's almost as if standing next to the intake gills outside the car would be the equivalent of sticking your ears up to a conch shell, except with a direct audio link to 24 valves at 7500 RPM yelling loud noises at you. So far we have concluded that Caymans with aftermarket intakes dyno much better than 911s do because the Cayman/Boxster intake system is sealed and separate from the engine bay. With the 997, all of the aftermarket intakes are succeptible to heat soak if not wrapped tight in a box.

It's louder with the windows up unless you're in a tunnel. Then windows down begins to scare you and passengers next to you.

Awesome! I was almost certain that the new intake design on the 987 was responsible for killing the great intake sound that comes with the 986. Your vid makes me 100% sure that is what happened. De-snorkeling and going to an aftermarket filter does not give much more sound on the 987 like it did on the 986. It's still too quiet for my taste.

So you put the filter in there behind the side vent grille? Can you post of a pic of the filter setup? I hope you are planning to sell these, because I need one.

[EDIT] Nevermind, found the pics.

Hi Wulfgang,

The manufacturer of the intake has posted photos and video. The link is provided below. If you have any further questions, feel free to email me. I need to log into Rennlist more often.

We have just released this Air Intake system, thanks to BGB for all the R&D that was done on this. If anyone is interested in this upgrade, give them a call or PM me for pricing.
thanks,

Would love a comparison to stock to easily hear the difference. Personally I love it!

No sir. That's engine cover on. Since the filming of this video we have created a template for a panel though that further reduces the noise another 40% from what you hear above.

Thanks.

That's quite alright, my brain loves the wail of a snorting flat-6. The more wail and snorting, the better.

I think I can speak for most drivers that as long as the music is missing the dreaded "drone", it's all good.

I would have a lot more respect for these products if they just called them "noisemakers" instead of "cold air intakes".

Seems like an excellent noisemaker.

I also enjoy playing cards in my bicycle spokes.
