987 hard top
I am very close to buying a 987 boxster as a third car. My wife was curious whether or not the 987 can accept a hard top and if so, does the 986 top fit? We really don't need the top now but might some day.

When I purchased my '06 987/S, I bought the hardtop at the same time, you can see it on the Porsche website, in the Tequipments section. When it came in, it had to be installed as brackets had to be installed, but it was a 6 hour install, could end up being longer depending on the mechanic's skills and motivation. I used it for the first few months, and I tend to put it on once or twice a year during the "hash" southern california winters....gee, tomorrow will be 93 degrees. It gives the car a different look, I would consider using it on certain trips, but mainly I bought it because I felt it looked retro, and I got carried away. It isn't exactly the same as factory installed, but very close, don't worry about it. I have the Porsche zip cover and keep it on a cart. Doesn't take up much garage space as I have a 3 car garage and only 2 cars now. It only takes 2 people to put it on, it weighs around 60-70 lbs max, I believe, so a male neighbor versus your wife is a better choice, have the wife guide and watch the defroster cable...and DO NOT drop the connector for the rear defroster into the convertible folded area, thank God for chopsticks....I don't recall if they made a hardtop from Porsche for the 986, I would be hesitant to buy an aftermarket one, and would say, save the money. The Nav system was a waste of money, I should have gotten the PASM however bad lower back. I had test driven the PASM with the tiptronic they used then, versus the PDK now, I would still buy the manual.

Thanks for the posts. That Cayman top thing is pretty cool but not really worth it for me as my daily driver is a 2010 E550 4-Matic sport so I already have a pretty fast car with a roof.

Recently lost my 987v2 Guards Red in a garage fire......... I was all set to try an install of the used Guards Red Factory Top in the spring for the first time. Where is the Part Number Stamped, want to ensure I have it listed properly when I go to sell.

Just bought a 07 Boxster for my sweetums and we are both super impressed how nice the top is, no need for a hardtop, at least up here in the northwest. Noticed moisture accumulated pretty quickly and the windows fogged up the first time we drove it in the rain, the car didn’t melt contrary to my own belief about my Carrera, but after pressing a few of the climate control buttons all was good. With the top up doing 80 down the freeway there is no drumming and only a slight amount of wind noise just behind the rear seats. I actually think it may be quieter than my 10 Carrera S.

Learned something new today............ In May of 2021 I purchased a Guards Red Hardtop for my 987V2 Boxster based on an Executor of the Estate stating the deceased owned an '05 Boxster S. In my post in this thread, I asked if there was a PN on the Hardtop itself......
Well, today I learned the key to identifying a 986 vs 987 Hardtop, the backside of the access cover to the overhead locking latch, its PN on the back has a prefix "986" or "987". Wish I had learned that before the purchase but _HIT HAPPENS. as they say..... I thought I pulled an old man thing when I pulled the replacement cover out this morning and it didn't fit WHY-I-OUGHT-TA.... When I purchased the hardtop the access cover had some broken pins and wouldn't stay in so I ordered replacement for a 987 last fall, never looked at the old broken cover until this morning... DOUBLE WHY-I-OUGHT-TA.....

in general, i don't like the looks of removable hardtops on cars that were originally designed as roadsters. BUT the boxster is an exception, IMO. 
my porsche mech has one on his boxster. looks great!
IIRC, porsche offered not only the removable hardtop but an expen$$$ive caddy mechanism to move it around and store it too. ...not surprising i guess.
