Ruf or Farnbacher Loles
If you had a Cayman S or a Boxster S and you were going to do some mods...would you go with Ruf or Farnbacher Loles? If you selected Ruf would you go with the engine swap or Kompressor conversion? thank you in advance for your views...

Can't really help you but will put in 0.02, anyway. I think Nordschliefe has driven a SC 3.8, and that seems like the ultimate wet sump version. I assume either place will build what you want for $$, even if it's not listed on a website as an option. The recent thread about a turbo transformation (996tt motor, I think), and of course the occasional comment about a GT3 engine are most interesting to me, but noone seems to offer that - at least not obviously. All else being equal, I'd take a Cayman S with a GT3 engine it it, please.
Not that resale is really an issue with a modded car (mod=loss, usually), but RUF might hold value better than FL among general Pcar people. FL perhaps would do better among trackmeisters? I don't know.
Either way, a souped Cayman or Boxster would be a hell of a lot of fun!
Good luck, and let us know what you end up doing.

As Stedge has pointed out, I have driven the 3.8K Cayman. The ASA supercharger does not make the car feel like a forced induction engine, just one with more capacity.
I love the car, with 'over' 440 bhp the chassis comes alive. In fact there are a lot of things which can also be done to make it even more exciting.
In Germany we are seeing racing Cayman being developed and they are starting to really get it together. Based on our own experience and that of the guys who have raced them, the Cayman is a great car which handles a lot of horsepower quite happily.
If you are going down this path, be aware that an engine swap on a Cayman is not a cheaper alternative to the GT3, its an alternative.
Whether you prefer Ruf or Farnbacher Loles is up to you. If you are serious about it, go talk to both of them and their customers.

Race Car
ive been up to loles and checked out those GT-Rs....sick rides. All up to you, i like the whole GT3 front look on them. RUF looks too kitted out to me, the GT-Rs look super clean.
Plus as an aside, i would rather buy a modded car from a company that actually builds, races and mantains race cars. I believe they just took a championship this year.

It's up to you. If you want bodywork done as well I'd go with FL for the GT3 front-end conversion, the Ruf stuff is too blingy for me. FL is probably much more convenient, as well. Conn. versus TX.

What turned you against the engine swap or supercharger options?

thought about the HP that I would have at my foot and concluded it would be way more than I really need given the amount of time I will be behind the wheel...and the likelihood I would get in to trouble with it...

While there is little available on them now, you might also want to throw Sportec on the list. They have a new Florida based distributor. They have an engine swap and their conversion won a lot of praise in the European press.
Just an FYI.

I'd suggest any Ruf branded upgrades would have some resale value and be a "known quantity" in terms of results.
I've heard of mixed results from people buying from FL, so I'd be cautious to ensure you're getting the quality you're expecting before the car returns to you -- doing anything, even simple things like the cosmetics and the suspension upgrade by remote control adds some "variables" so I'd invest in a round trip to visit the car to sign off on the work. Of course, I'd do the same working with Ruf or any third party installing Cargraphic products or any other top shelf parts.
It sounds like you're going to have a nice, distinctive and personal car. Good luck.
