Got a new Cayman, and love it. (Also have a 997 Carrera S, love it too. Can't have too many.) Anyway, the rear hatch on the Cayman rattles over bumps. Anybody else have this problem? I just don't have time in the next few weeks to get back to the dealer. Is there an adjustment in there somewhere that I can fiddle with?
I had the same issue as many others. The hatch is actually not rattling it is that privacy curtain thingy to cover the contents of the rear storage area. I removed that to test and no more rattles
There is a TSB on this. I bought the parts myself since I hate the service department here in Beverly Hills (notice I didn't mention the dealer's name but you can probably guess). The parts consist of 2 rubber bumpers that go along the side rails of the hatch. They cost $22 and I installed them in under 5 minutes. I was skeptical that this would fix the problem but it did. It is completely quiet now.
The damage code is w6150660002.
The part number is 987.512.899.01 and requires a Torx T30 wrench. Of course you can just have the dealer install it.
I checked out the rubber stops and screwed them out a little. I don't have the privacy curtain, but I did notice one of the interior tail light access covers was loose, so I fixed that. It was raining, so I didn't test drive it last night. Next time I'm in for service I'll inquire about the tech bulletin. Seems like the rubber bumpers for the side rails would be the best bet. Thanks again.
I tried screwing out the rubber stops also but it didn't help. The rubber stops along the side rails I mentioned above replace the existing ones and are redesigned although they look similar.
Dealer will fix it for free under E Campaign W615: Replace rear hatch buffers. I haven't heard any rattles from the rear yet.
Anyone have an occasional metallic vibration-like rattle, seemingly coming from the far corner of the dash? I have/had that. I couldn't track down the exact location of mine until I discovered it accidently by bumping the windshield post while cleaning the inside of the windshield. Yes, it's in the post rather than the dash. It makes the same vibration sound when I hit the post. Good sound, so I'm joining a band.
Give the windshield post a few good shots with the heel of your hand. I had that noise, located to that same point, and by hitting it home it apparently seated itself on its internal clips more firmly; rattle/buz gone.
