Mooty, I've been riding the tracer for a couple of years now, have tried out the newer VPP ones, but still hesitating on those since I'm so used to the tracer. How's the maverick? I haven't seen them on the trail here.

Still looking for the CS, but my local dealers do not have a great selection of 06s left since I was hoping to get a better deal on those.

VPP doesn't work right unless you want 5" or more of travel and it's very very picky in set up.

if you like tracer, you will not like maverick. it's fully active, but not as much as 4 bar ala specialized or tracer. a tracer rider would feel the rear is locked out (it's not, just doen't move as much). it's 4" at the back but feels like 2.5". very very slacked angle, takes some getting used to. i went to it from merlin and seven hardtails. took me 6 months to figure out how to ride mav fast. but now i won't ride anything else. the chassis is very long. it will not make tight multiple switch backs like tracer can. it's forte is in damping, the rear shock is huge and carries lots of oil for damping. it rides very different when it's on pavement vs. on trail. on pavement, it's a pos, but then you wouldn't ride it on pavement.

where are you located? plenty of cayman S in CA dealers. if you are in SF, i can get you pretty good deals.

I rode the Blur a little bit with the VPP and didn't like it as much since I was more used to the plusher feel. I'm thinking about the new Intense 5.5 or 6.6 which are very nice and I heard works very well with the VPP. I'm in AZ, so for my riding, I need something that will smooth out the ride as much as possible since most of the trails are very rocky.

I may have to go to CA to get a Cayman, since there are only 2 dealers in AZ the selection can be limited.

if you do buy from CA, let me know, i may be able to help. i am not a car sales guy, just know someone who is and bought quite a few from him.

if you find blur is NOT plush enough, dont bother trying maverick.

Maybe I'm naive, but getting any discount on an almost no mileage car that has more warranty than when it left the factory sounds pretty good to me...even if it was a dealer demo car. I suppose you run the risk of more headaches, but they won't cost you anything but a little of your time. Not for six years / 100k miles anyway!

If you're serious, throw an offer at them. The worst they can do is say no...

Hi guys, thanks for all of the input. I ended up picking up a new base 997. It had all of colors (interior and exterior) and options that I wanted. So, I figured why not give it a try. It's probably not going to be as good at the autocrosses, but should still be just as much fun.

Anyone here autocrossed a Cayman and a 997?

Mooty, what size tires have you used? I have 19s with 235(f) and 295(r), but have thought about getting 18s for the track and autocross. But the standard 18s are 235(f) and 265(r). What kind of balance shoud I expect if I do end up going with 265s in the rear? Other than tires, I plan on leaving pretty much everything else stock for now.

245/40/18 275/35/18 toyo ra1
235/40/18 265/35/18 mpsc
both will be pretty neutral

you need lots of camber, basically max out front camber and dial in rear accordingly.
try tow out up front as well.

I've been thinking of the Michelins PSCs as well. Are those the sizes you used on your gt3 or cayman?
