ah... well., there are plenty of bimmerhead on this site, frayed, cosmos and myself. i think they would agree wiht me that street pads or not, bmw brakes are not remotely close to porsche brakes. there are things in which a bmw does better than porsches, but brakes is most certainly NOT one of them.

BMW stock brakes area a joke compared to the P-cars, don't know of any*stock* BMW brake setup that would survive a track like Laguna Seca.

They are not close to being turn-key track cars by a very *big* margin

Another bimmer dood chiming in on brakes.

CSL brakes or not if there is no added cooling with hoses and backing plates the Z4M brakes will melt under any sort of proper track use. It will not matter what pads you use as the fluid will boil into steam. The caliper is too small.

BMW brakes are great on the street. No upgrades are needed. On the track cooling is required.

Or if you are serious about tracking then go with a big brake kit. I use StopTech myself. Others like Brembos. I heard great things about the AP kit.
I also have cooling hoses but I ran for a year without them and never got fade. But I did get a hub to fail from all the heat.

Porsche on the other hand does equip their cars with proper calipers from the factory. Yes, if you go crazy on r-comps you can outrun them but for most people a good set of Pagid race pads and proper brake fluid would be enough.

BMWs brakes are shameful compared to what we get on our Porsches.

Not only do they underperform for spirited track use, but due to the floating caliper design, suffer from poor pedal feel as the pads and rotor wear. I think this is due to tapered pad and rotor wear.

All this is relative to Porsches brakes. . . and I'm quite spoiled right now since the PCCBs are other-worldly.

I agree. I never had a problem with BMW brakes but the brakes in the Cayman S are far superior to anything I have had in any of my Bimmers.

Hey John,

I'm enjoying the new car a whole of a lot more than the GT3, something about mid-engine cars that seems to suit my driving style better , hehe

See you on Friday

Ken

P.S. If the BMW folks are not having problems with their stock brakes, maybe they are not going fast enough at the track

It's interesting you perceived such a big difference in weight between the Cayman and 997S ... isn't the difference in curb weight less than 200 lbs.?

I'm sort of surprised people gripe about the weight of the current Carreras so often. Frankly, at a bit over 3,100 pounds (for the S) they're surprisingly light. My Honda S2000, considered a fairly light car by today's standards, was approx. 2,900 lbs. What amazes me is that the BMW M Coupe outweights the 997S. When I look across the entire BMW model lineup, I wonder if they're building their cars out of lead these days.

Just curious, does anyone know how much less the 993 or even 964 models were compared to today's 997?

993 C2 = 3064 lbs, according to my car's manual.

it's a stock e36m3 motor (70k miles), CAI, jim conforti chip that's it.
i have baffled oil pan, but lost oil pressure (oil is overfilled a tad like eveyone does with e36m3's), #6 bearing gone, crank shaft scored to hell. the case didn't actually get puncture YET.

I think I saw your car resurrected a couple of months ago. It's got the 8-ball sticker, right? Saw it getting trailered in, so the new owners definitely treat it better than you ever did
