Have been complaining to my dealer for 6 months about thumping noise behind both driver and passenger (since 12,000 miles), when car was cold (in winter) only over small bumps, not big ones. Various techs at dealer drove car and said no noise. This week I took out head tech at dealer because of tire balancing issue (actually bad Michelin PS2 tire from Tire Rack--replaced within 24 hr.) but he heard noise and said it was from a bad bushing on the inboard connection of the rear trailing arms--said he had just fixed this in a 986. Both trailing arms (987-331-043-02) replaced under warranty--and noise is gone! Now happy, but have been trying to get rid of this annoying noise for 6 months!!!

Interesting. I've got the same noise. I thought it had something to do with the boot rattling against the catch. I've extended the rubber bushings on the bump stop until they are almost out to try and stop it. Didn't work. Next service visit, I'm having those trialing arms checked. Thanks!!!

Can either of you descibe the "thumping" noise in more detail? Do you get it with the top up or down? When my top is up, I hear a slight thumping sound over small bumps on my morning commute coming from the rear on the drivers side. In all other situations the noise is not there.

Exactly my experience with the noise--seems to have resolved after trailing arm repacement.
