It seems like people are choosing the 997S over the 987S. Hasn't anyone chosen the standard 997 cab over the 987? If so, why?
Where did you get that people are choosing the 997S over the 987S? I think there are more 987S's out there than there are 997S's. That would indicate more people are choosing the 987S. Same thing with the 997 base cab vs the 987 base.
With regards to the hot rod Cayman, have you guys seen the 997 GT3? Looks HOT!! I don't believe there will EVER be a Cayman produced by Porsche that will out perform the GT3. Ruf, maybe will make one, but then there is the problem of where to do maintenance and service. GT3 is my next Porsche.

No. You misunderstood my statement. What I meant was, when cross-shopping between the 997 and 987, it seems that after choosing to buy the Carrera over the Boxster, more people choose the Carrera S rather than going with the standard Carrera. Or, to put it another way, people are moving up from Boxsters to 997S cabs. For example, Deven says he used to own a Boxster, and now he has a Carrera S cab. My question is, why not get the standard Carrera cab in lieu of the S? In my post above I was making an obervation that it seems like more people choose the S cab over the base cab. I definitely agree that there are more Boxsters out there.
I think that the reason why more people chose a S over base is because the S comes standard with some of the options many (most) people will want anyways (19 wheels, PASM, xenon lights, etc). So after factoring the options the price difference between the base and S 'only' is 5K or so, and for that one gets a bigger engine with more hp and torque. Since Porsche charges a premium for HP (ala X51) then one considers this a 'bargain'. Also many people think that the base 997 should actually be the current 'S' and the X51 should be the S. Also the base 997 is really no different than a 996 from engine point of view, and currently 996's are going at a 'bargain' thus the 'value' of a new base 997 is relatively less.
I test drove the 987S and 997S Cab extensively as I wanted to make sure that the difference in price was going to be justified. 997S Cab is about two weeks away.
While the 987S feels "purer" in terms of handling I missed the feeling of weight that you get at the back of the 997 and how that influences the handling. Maybe I've just got used to driving it in a different way.
But the biggie was the difference in "grunt" between the two. The 997S feels so much more powerful that it would be hard to give that sensation up.
I also liked the extra space in the 997S Cab, even though there are no kids and only occassionally one or two people who get squeezed in there for a very short distance.
If the 987S had the Cayman S engine or the 997S engine though it might have be different...
Boxster S is a marvellous car, a joy to drive and a bliss in terms of manoeuvrability. But it is not, and never will be, a unique car, being comparable, as it is, to several other makes in the sport/roadster class. Whereas the 911 is unique. Uncomparable.
