X-51 options is $16,900. Then you'd have to pay to install it which is non-trivial.

You mean you can buy an x51 motor for $17k? ...or the option to put one in your Carrera S is $17k?

I'm asking only for our imaginary comparison above. To get a true cost to cost comparison, the 997S would have to have an x51 motor as well. So I was wondering how much that costs "from the factory"...

That is just for the option which adds about 26HP.

I used the Car Configurator to build a Carrera S which is closely configured to my Cayman S, plus the X-51 performance package and it came out to $102K! So, that's a 911 with 90+HP for a difference of $32K. Hmmm... there is a good chance you could get an X51 motor installed for that amount Last time I looked, it cost about $20K to install a 3.6L motor in a Boxster so if you could get an X-51 motor, it seems possible to do it for $32K. At that price, it would be a reasonable mod.

I hope someone does it and compares it to a Carrera S X-51... which magazine should we get to do it?!!

I don't think the X51 package is a fair/economical one because it includes upgrades such as airbox, headers, and exhaust upgrades which would be worthless on a transplant. Also, it is questionable whether or not the revised intake manifolds and ECU programming could be used. I think about all that you could use for sure would be the heads with revised cams. The ECU and Varioram intake manifolds would be a maybe. I think aftermarket cams/ECU/intake plumbing/exhaust would be better since most of the latter would be needed anyway. The 9ff stuff (different post) looks interesting if it's real. Instead of an X51, they offer a 4.0L. http://shop.eurocarboutique.com/Engine_C189.cfm

That Porsche charges $17K for these "upgrades" is absurd since I doubt the difference in cost if the upgrades were in the 3.8L to begin with would probably only be $1K or $2K, if that. The GT3 motor is more like a $17K upgrade. As others feel, the base should have been the non-X51 3.8L. Then, the Cayman S could have gotten the 3.6L while the base Cayman got the 3.4L. That would be more consistent with their pricing structure.

I was told by F-L that the X51 crate motor retails for around $33,000, no way can you buy an engine like this for $16-17k.

I've seen this car in person and it looks amazing! They are also running another Cayman project... involving a turbo.

I would not be surprised if RUF has a turbo conversion for the Cayman S within 6 minths.

A 650HP Ruf Cayman, oh yeah, that would be nice. Would probably cost over $300K though...

I'd be happy with a Cayman GT3 for $100K
