I did it with my leased X5 and got $5,000 in "equity" toward my new car. The market value on my car was more than the buyout and I pocketed the difference. First, nobody can predict the future. Second, residuals are artificially set by manufacturers for many reasons such as to keep payments low and move cars or protect them against having to eat excess depreciation at the end of a lease. I think used car prices are generally set by what they bring at auction (current public demand) and not what is on a 3 year old contract.
