I have an MY 2000 996 that I love dearly. It's likely not worth half the cost of a new CaymanS, but i'm just itching to have one. What is the over riding upside of moving up/down?

 

Which way would you consider yourself moving? Would it be down if you find the Cayman to be quicker than your 996? Of course, it will be up in terms of cost because it's 6 years newer than your 996. It's a bit clearer that it's all up in my case. With a Cayman S coming, I just sold my 964 RSA. After reading all the early reports on the Cayman, I felt that it must have been intentionally designed to make me buy my first new Porsche. Thus, I was just itching to have one too. So after a string of used 911s, I'm finally ready to boldly leap into the 21st century with a tight, water-cooled, mid-engined coupe. Since I consider it a move up from my RSA in just about every way (I'm looking foward more to the handling change than to the extra power), it doesn't yet bother me that I'll no longer be driving a flagship 911. If this sounds similar to the way you feel, you're probably a good Cayman S prospect. The word from a Porsche spokesman was that they expected only about 5% of 911 owners to switch to the Cayman, whereas they would get more moving up from the Boxster, plus some first-time Porsche buyers. I think they may have underestimated the percentage of 911 owners who make the switch.

 

I think you were crazy (figure of speech) to sell your RSA for a Cayman....the only place to go from an RSA is to a GT3.

The Cayman iis mid-engined, different dynamics than a 911 (not better, not worse).

The 911, well once you know it...... there is no substitute.

Try that GT3 before you commit, and then come back and thank me.

 

The GT3s have plummeted in price...good for you...okay for us since most have driven the heck out of them. They are easility attainable at close to Cayman prices. I saw the Cayman and it looks good..I love the mid engine layout. In fact I bought a new Boxster S last summer and thought it was superb.....sold it within two weeks cause it was just so far away from my GT3...it got boring very quickly. It depends on what your really buying the car for...but I agree with Colm its worth driving the 3 and then deciding.....the GT3 is just so epic that I still love it after 12k miles as much as the day I got it. So you think your 996 isn't worth at least $29-32K??????? A new Cayman is only $58K and roughly $65K for a nicely optioned one. Not sure what condition your 996 is in but I am sure you could easily get $40K for it. The 99's just starting dipping below $40K so I am sure your 2000 is still worth more than you think.

then scratch that itch. get as much as possible for the 996, as soon as possible. if you keep the Cayman as long as you have your '00, you'll be fine "deal-wise". have fun!

 

The 99 996 can be had for <$32K all day long. I know of 1 for under 28K right now---get out of your 2000 ASAP.

 

High miles, not taken care of, question about the history, etc. will be in the sub $32K category ALL DAY LONG. That is not the car I was referring to.
