Default Gift for my Father-in-law...please help!

My Father-in-law bought a 2005 Boxter S this summer... let's say I helped him catch the bug after I bought my 964.

I am told he will need a roll bar if he goes to a driver's ed class. Does anyone know the part number of this item? He will not modify his car, so I am looking for a bolt-on part that can be put on for DEs.

Thanks for the help!

Do the broomstick test. Have your dad sit in the car with his helmet on, and place a broomstick on top of the windshield and the rear hoops. If there is at least an inch of space between the top of his helmet and the broomstick, then he does not need any add-on roll bars. The roll bar hoops that came with the car are adequate for DE's in the Cleveland area. Check out the 987S pics in the link by my sig. That's a 987S in a DE with the stock roll bar hoops, running perfectly legal.

I believe each PCA region/chapter sets its own policy with respect to cabriolets.

There aren't any choices that don't involve minor mods. Daughtery offers bolt in bars for 911 cars, but doesn't appear to offer one for a Boxster. You might call them and ask for help.

Maybe...987 seats are mounted low. At 6' I can fit with my helmet and a few inches to spare.

Well..........sometimes gifts are given whether you need it or not.

Here's a link to a roll bar extension made by Brey-Krause. Roll bar extension . Originally for the 986, it might fit the 987. Either that or they have one for the 987 that's not on the web site. Give them a call.

My understanding is that:
1) the 987 roll hoops are higher than on the 986, and eliminate the need (in many cases) to purchase an additional roll bar;
2) certain tracks will require a roll bar (regardless of broomstick test results) if the top is lowered on the track due to concerns that the hoops will "stick" in unpaved surface.

My suggestion...do the broomstick test and then check the requirements for the specific tracks that you intend to drive.

Hope that helps.

Does the hardtop for the boxsters qualify for most DE events? I know each region/chapters have their own rules. I know its an expensive gift, but you can sometimes find some used ones ,if they are accepted instead of rollbars at your DE events. Good luck.

My understanding is that the hardtop is accepted & that the broomstick test is not performed when a hard top is installed - you still want to make sure that the driver/passenger have adequate headroom, though - for safety reasons.

Hope that helps.
