Question Oil Leak, Cam Cover

4300 miles, oil leak, left hand side cam cover. Boy oh boy, I hope this is not indicitive of the Finnish fit 'n finish.

Am I alone on this, or <gulp> ... are there others? At least I get an oil change out of the deal.

Anecdotally, the salesperson said when I dropped off the car on Sunday: "There was a time when oil leaking from a Porsche was considered normal." I reminded him it was 2005, and things had changed slightly.

My C4S, pretty much the same block as the 987, had the same leak. They fixed it the same day as the oil service day. Still leaks a bit whenever I take it to the track. Dry on regular driving days.

The curse of the M96 motor seems to be the oil seals. Not just RMS, but all of them. Nothing internal, thank goodness.

BTW, 4,000 miles on the 987S, 5 track days, no leaks. Fingers crossed.

mbodo,
Very sorry for you to hear of the leak...am glad that it is repairable per Palting's experience...where and how did you notice the leak, as well as how much oil was leaking, if you don't mind me asking? Also, was your 987S built in Finland or Deutschland?

schnell987,

Final assebly was in Finland according to the Maroney sticker. I parked the car in several different positions in the garage, each time resulted in a 3" / 7½cm pool of oil. The oil was on the driver's side, possibly in line with the rear wheel.

It should be noted that a 3" pool of oil is relativly shallow, and roughly the size of a beer coaster you might find at your local pub.

Amazingly, there were several "defects" that were fixed, as noted on the invoice, that I hadn't noticed (popping noise fixed with convertable top, hood latch issue..) neither one of these bothered me, but at least they're fixed now (shrug).
