This is great, the worst thing about the boxster was there was no room.

I need to talk my wife into getting this for her self. She can pack in the groceries no problem.

With two trunks, I could easily fit $200 in groceries in the Boxster....

I've found Boxster storage to be spacious also. They're saying Cayman will have twice the rear storage--even more than a BMW 330!

I can't even begin to think about storage space as a selling point for a Porsche......I can't imagine why Porsche is pushing it......very funny to me.
Maybe it's to carry all those expensive Porsche accessories shown in the
picture. Another way for Porsche to make money!

Have any other mid engine cars had a hatchback setup such as this?

They've sold an awful lot of Cayennes, and not for the gas mileage.

The hatchback was a selling point for the 944, too. (Alas, they never told anyone about the inevitable leaks & squeaks!) I hope the Cayman hatchback is a better design.

I don't think so...but that's kinda the point. I don't think they're "pushing" this, just pointing out that owning a Porsche doesn't mean sacrifice...you can still have a "usable" car while enjoying a true Porsche.

After reading some more articles it does make sense to address practicality to some degree. If you couldn't take the care on the road anywhere that might take some fun out of it.

Porsches have always been known as "usable supercars"...that's why I love them so much.

At least a Cayenne is supposed to haul crap. I just never thought of loading a bunch of stuff in a Porsche sports car to haul around. I can see a gymbag, maybe a laptop, etc........but not filling it up beyond the rear window view......still really funny to me, and can't see how Porsche would push it as a major selling point.

Having a sports car that can carry golf clubs is a big deal to me (and I'm sure a lot of other people out there). My 944s / 968 were great in that respect, the family 964 Turbo was terrible. I know you can get clubs into a 911, but it is a bit of a pain and it marks up the back seat. Judging my the Porsche photo clubs can fit into the back, and that would be a great selling point. I'm out of the car market right now (take the subway everywhere) but in a couple of years a new Cayman S (or Club Sport?) will be at the tops of my list.

Poeple today have a pack rat mentality - they have lotsa " stuff' whether at home or on the road . Ever notice that people park their $80K cars permanently outside because their garages offer an additional 1000 sq feet of storage space? Ever looked at " high end " homes built 50-60 years ago with miniscule closets and no other storage other than a kitchen pantry - that's all people owned back then. Clothes , linens, kitchen gear and a couple desk top radios and maybe one TV . Automakers have to address that- they can't afford to offer cars less than $100K that carry only the owners manual ( see Lotus Elise ).

I noticed you're in the Bay Area. Yesterday I saw a Lotus Elise during rush hour heading down Montgomery, straight through the middle of the Financial District. The driver was in a business suit. Apparently some Elise drivers are actually using their cars to commute! Although it was the first time i've seen that one and I take that route daily...

Orient Express

The back of the Cayman reminds me of my 1990 Nissan 300ZX. It had a flat storage tray behind the seats that opened into a deeper bay in the rear. The nice thing about the center tray is that it was large enough for a cooler, or a small dog, or a small travel bag.

I think that this sort of interior packaging will really appeal to many people that may be considering cars like a Corvette or an Audi TT or the 350Z.

This car should sell very well.
