718 GTS
If like me you thought this might be the next car, have a look below.
In my 987S on a back road I spend 90% of the time in third gear, which is responsive and lively at any speed between 45 and 100 mph. Looks like for $60,000 more I can have a GTS and do the same roads..... but stuck in second gear. Not much of an attraction.
And I have proper steering as God intended with no stupid buttons on my steering wheel.
Thanks Zygrene, you saved me a ton of cash.

As a long time (10 year) owner of a 987.2 and a 2021 Spyder, I can tell you that I love both. But if I could only have one, the 718 wins hands down. The engine makes the whole experience so much better...Things feel smooth, fast, and almost telepathic. Maybe consider driving one yourself before weighing other people's opinions too heavily.
i second that. i have a '12 CS and a '17 CS and if forced to choose the 718 wins every day and twice on saturdays. it's just a more refined car and you can't beat the torque on it (2.5T). more power, more options, more better
as suggested you should try one on for size if you are thinking about upgrading. the buttons on the steering wheel are an option, not a requirement, and apparently god thought they were good enough to use on 987s too!

I drove a 718 Cayman S 2.5L, with buttons the wheel, for a week in California and loved every second of it. I loved the look of the car, I loved the interior, I loved the Bose stereo having Carplay, I even loved the PDK. It was amazing on Palms to Pines highway, it was amazing on 101 in a torrential downpour. I loved that car so much that I considered ordering one new. Would I trade my 2.9L 987.2 for one? Not in a million years. I'd love to have both, but I can't part with a car that feels so good, looks amazing (best looking car since the 60's IMO) and sounds so great at WOT.
I think his point in the video about whether $100K for a GTS 4.0 is money best spent vs. other Porsche options is pretty fair, though it can be said for almost any new vs. used car debate. The biggest competition for new Porsches are often old Porsches. Plenty of people feel the 911 peaked with the 993, after all. The 718 is the better car...if it's not, the engineers aren't doing their job. I've tracked both my R and the GTS 4.0, and the latter is both faster and feels more competent overall. What it's not, however, is more fun (to me). The 987 is more engaging, and I feel like I have to get it right to drive fast vs. the car getting it right for me. If we're talking a new or newish Porsche then ~$100K for a GTS is a pretty solid deal for what you get, but I agree with him that with a $100K budget I'd personally buy a used something else.
Sure, the new models are always "more refined" and faster, there's no arguments on that.
But you can't put your arms out the door as the door is almost as high as the driver's shoulder, and seating position is like sitting inside a tank. It's harder to look over to the front fenders which helps with turn in.
987 is the last generation to have a great driving position with great 360deg visibility like F16 cockpit.
