Default Upgrading CDR-30

Hi. Sorry for the ignorant question, but I’m based in the UK and would like to upgrade the CDR-30 in my 987.2 to a PCM3.0 so that I can add CarPlay. Is this possible ?

Is this easy to do ? Wasn’t sure if I can just buy a used PCM3.0 unit ? I have a friend who is a Porsche tech but wasn’t sure if PIWIS can be used to code a PCM 3.0 unit (from an another car) to work in mine ?

Also, is it worth upgrading the HDD to SSD ?

Yes, it possible and the car will have to have its coding updated to accept the PCM. If you buy a used PCM, make sure to get the VIN from the car it came from and/or the security code.

Many thanks. I see that used units are sold
for ~£100-200 on eBay.

just need to find someone who can handle the coding.

just to be clear, is it the unit that has to be coded or my car ?

Nick at NM Automotive can do it. These are the costs he gave me;
  1. GPS Antenna and cable - £195 ex VAT. Codes £200 VAT not applicable
  2. Most/Analogue convertor and 4 speaker amp (your car currently should have 2 front speakers?) - £150 ex VAT
  3. Coding, function enabling and loading maps - £180 VAT not applicable (2hrs labour)
  4. CarPlay kit if required - £425 ex VAT
  5. Installation and testing of CarPlay sub-board if required - £90 VAT not applicable (1hrs labour)
I could pick up a PCM3.0 for £150 - but at a total price of £1500 I thought I’d wait and see if PCCM+ becomes available for the 987.2

Totally agree. For that money I would rather wait, and just buy a phone holder for now!

my car has the sound package plus, does that change the costings ?

was hoping that a PCM 3.0 unit could be used with the Mr12volt solution that I’ve just bought for my 981. But the £1,500 seems a lot for an aftermarket solution.

I have a 2011 Cayman with Sound Package Plus and the CDR-30. I replaced it with a $200 Sony touchscreen that has CarPlay. I am not an audiophile when I’m in the car. Occasionally some background music or news. But I wanted CarPlay. Install was maybe $200. In the USA, an owner can buy a pre-made harness, radio cage, and faceplate from Suncoast. It looks very clean and works well. To me, being that I did not have PCM, it’s a great solution. As always, YMMV.
