Default DEAD KEY FOB?

We aquired 2006 base in April with only 1 key/fob and now fob seems dead. Tried 2 batteries and nothing. Do these die after 17 years? Can they be tested? We can live without the locking and trunk/frunk opening as our 1984 Targa has no fob.
Wife can't believe its $600ish for new key and fob so she put air tag on it.
ADVICE?

If your fob is like most, the battery compartment has a steel spring shaped something like this \___/ that should firmly press the battery against its contact. This spring can "flatten" over time, fail to complete the circuit on the battery and render the fob useless. Bending the "arms" of the spring up so that they make better contact with the battery will remedy this problem.

Also, I know it sounds obvious but be sure you're placing the battery in the proper orientation. Being DC current, it only works in one position. My 981 has the + pole facing up, as did my 993; so this may be a Porsche thing.

Hope this helps...

I got my '05 3 years ago. Came with 2 fobs, one works, the other, yeah, dead. I tried all manners, dead.
I found this guy that sells new circuit boards, Unfortunately, he's 'been 'out-of-stock' for 6 months. I've emailed him a few times with no answer.

I have an '06 also and 1 keyfob stopped working. I bought a new fob on Amazon that had good reviews and transferred the transponder over. The transponder is glued in, so you have to be very carefully in removing it as to not damage it. There are Youtube videos showing the process.

I had good luck replacing one of my FOB’s that had been dropped one too many times.

Wife fiddled with the little spring inside the fob and it works now!
