Question Socket (?) Beside Cupholder

2008 987. I'm not a gearhead; just like to drive.

To the left of the flap that hides the cupholders is a small similar flap that hides ... what? Some sort of socket? I can find no reference to it n the owner's manual.

I might be answering a question that you're not asking, but I'm going to go for it anyway...

That smaller flap covers the horizontal gear and spring in your above pic? They are the pivot for the left cupholder. When it's extended, the arm of the cupholder holds that flap open, allowing you to then press closed the center cover.

The right side works the same way.

... which then prevents them from swinging back and forth. Duh. It's Dumb Driver for a reason. Actually I've never used the cupholders so that the higher mysteries of their operation remained a sealed book to me.
