987.2 Cayman vs Cayman S ... preferences, pros and cons

Here are some additional arguments for the base that I use to justify my base track car over the S. Mine is PDk and I'd want a PDK S if I bought one. The 2.9L stresses the engine, gearbox, drive train, brakes, etc. less than the 3.4L (lower power =less stress). The gearbox doesn't get as hot. I have not installed the central radiator as I don't feel I need it and I have not added a PDK cooler. 2.9L is lower weight (less engine, radiators, water, etec) and therefore has superior braking performance (all things being equal). I can't reach as high a speed on the straight as an S (good thing for me), and I can't accelerate out of the corners as well as an S, but corner entry and mid corner performance should be slightly better. I still get an awesome flat 6 sound!
I have decided on a minty-fresh base over the S i was looking at. The S appeared at first to be a really nice car, but turned out to have some questionable history, as well as a disturbing over-rev report. (I posted about that in a different thread.)
Options on the base do not include sport chrono, but otherwise is a nicely spec'd car.
It's coming from California, and I'm in Minnesota, so we're cooling our jets on transport until spring arrives. With all the snow we're getting, it could be years.
Further updates/pics as events warrant.

Congrats on making a decision! I've had a 987.2 for just over 2 years, still having fun and learning more about it.

i owe a 2.9.
heard that because this engine is non-dfi - there is no problem of oil dilution by injectors leaking so bore scoring is almost impossible.
it also has brakes from 345hp c2 997.2 (same as cayman r), radiators from 997 gt3 and oil cooler from 991.1 c2.
it's almost impossible to overheat it on a track

You didn't say if it was a manual or PDK. Sport/Sport+ can be added to a 987.2. IMO a must for a PDK especially at the track.

I drove the non s and the s, since I track I wanted the s with PDK, I have noticed whatever extra you pay for the s, you will probably get all the money you spent extra for the s back when you sell it.

Had a 2010 MT Base and loved it. Cornered beautifully, looked amazing, was just plain good.
Just picked up a 2010 MT S. The response on throttle is very nice in comparison. The S has just enough HP to not get yourself into too much trouble.
If you can, get an S.

I owned a M2C MT for two years. If you need the backseat, get the the M2C. It is a great DD with a lot of torque. I sometimes miss the low end torque. The S55 engine is solid if you don't tune. I had mine tuned to Stage 2 E85 600 hp. Impossible to put the power down in the rear. I didn't like the seating position, clutch and MT. I installed a UCP pedal and Auto Solutions SSK with CDV delete. It has good value for the price you pay. Wait until the new G87 M2 is released next week and see if the price of the M2C goes up or down.

I've had the UCP pedal on the M235 for about 4 years and an earlier slave cylinder without a CDV which I'll install this summer. All these fixes we have to do to make these later model BMW 6MTs drive nicely is silly. I think BMW intentionally made the 6MT difficult to drive smoothly so that people would go for the automatics. They're all about performance numbers and the company having more control over the car (i.e., no misshifts). I do love the S55, but spun hubs spook me. The N55 has treated me so well over the part 7+ years. It's a simple motor and with no M mark up on parts pricing. I can't afford two cars with premium markups on price
A DCT M2 N55 will definitely be the M235's replacement plus my intercooler, charge pipe, and a number of other parts can swap over. I find 380whp/400wtq of the M235 to be more than enough for the street and often times too much and traction is already severely limited in 1st and to some extent, 2nd. I can't imagine 600hp. LOL

I wish this could be found in a search, but "s" isn't a valid search term! I swear I tried!
For those of you who've either had both a base Cayman and a Cayman S, or chose one over the other to purchase, I'd love to hear your decision-making process.
Basically, I'm in the market for a 987.2 Cayman, and initially I'd been thinking S all the way. But I've seen some reaaaally nice non-S cars (online... haven't been able to drive a non-S yet), and I'm trying to determine whether an S is all that, or if the base Cayman (well optioned) is just as (or more) enjoyable.
I'm not gonna race the thing. Back roads and weekend jaunts, really. What might be an argument for getting a non-S car?
Anyone PREFER a non-S Cayman?
