Default 987.1 Cayman jerky steering when turning wheel

Hi everyone!

I have an issue that I cant seem to find in other threads.

Basically, when turning the wheel lock to lock (while parked), the steering wheel has a strong jerking sensation. It also happens when turning aggressively while driving spiritedly, but noticed mostly when parked or parallel parking.

Some things to note:
1. This is most prominent when the car is warmed up and has been drive for a while, when it’s cold it’s almost not noticeable at all
2. there is no whining noise at all at any time
3. power steering fluid is not leaking and the tank is properly filled
4. Really not sure this should matter but the car is outfitted with Bilstein B6, cayman R springs, and powerflex purple bushings all around.

Really curious to see if anyone has had a similar issue?

Thanks Zach, Im also thinking its something mechanical at the front end, and not the steering pump. I will have my mechanic check it out and report back.

Akosutic,
Google "ackermann effect." It's all about srteering geometry. My 2010BS does exactly the same.

hey joe,

I wish it was that… but no. I read all about the ackermann effect and watched videos. This is different. This happens while turning the wheel, and not by going forwards or backwards in full lock. It feels like an obvious mechanical fault.

I would inspect the accessory drive belt first. If it is good (Pliable, not frayed, no cracks, no hard shiny surfaces), then I would be suspicious of the pump itself.

Sounds to me like it's the steering rack failing. Maybe it works fine when the PS fluid is cold and more viscous, but has issues when it warms up?

Don’t think its the accessory belt as it was recently changed due to a failed water pump. Could be the PS pump, but it doesnt have any of the other symptoms of a failing pump like whining.

Yes it does feel worse when the car has been driven for a while. However what are the other symptoms of a failing rack? Because the steering feels fine otherwise. Most pronounced when at low speed while maneuvering or if taking a corner aggressively.

Leaks around the boots between the rack and the tie rods would be another sign also. But the rack could be bad even if not leaking I suppose.

I'm wondering why you're hanging out here rejecting every possible theory people offer. It's your steering for god's sake...Just take it to a good shop and let them diagnose what's going on...Otherwise you're at risk to have it fail catastrophically and kill someone in the process.
