Hi guys, first post so go easy on me. I have the opportunity to buy a very well taken care of 2010 cayman s with 130,000 miles. It is a one owner car. he has all the service records laminated, a bit overboard huh? But a good thing. I really was wanting a boxster because I am a convertible guy and a manual trans. but I can get this car at a good price 17k. Only thing that has me very concerned is the PDK trans. All I have read is that no replacement parts if it fails and 16-20k replacement cost if it does. Ugh. If it was a 6speed I would have already bought it. What would you do?
thanks
Also looking at a boxster base with 47k miles 6speed manual for 16.5k

If you want a manual Boxster you should wait until the right manual Boxster comes up.
I know the 987.2 is a great car, but 130,000 miles is a lot. The MA1 is a super stout engine, but nothing lasts forever and at some point an expensive rebuild will be required.
What year is the 47K mile Boxster?

Not sure what your budget is but I’d hold out for a nicer .2 Boxster. I think the .2 is definitely worth it but 130k miles is quite a bit. There’s also no reason to get a Cayman if what you really want is a Boxster, as Boxsters go for significantly less than their hardtop counterparts.

I'm biased, of course, but a 47,000 mile 987.1 Boxster Base is not exactly a garage queen because that averages out to 3000 miles annually and that COULD be a Saturday/Sunday car that gets out of the garage often enough.
But more than that, the so-called "Base" 2.7 is considered by many (including Jake Raby and other flat6 gurus) to be fairly understressed and very capable of lasting a very long time if well cared for. Even the bore-scoring of that Era seems to be extremely rare for that motor. At 2.7 liters it is almost exactly "square" geometrically speaking, and they believe the different pistons play a role in it too.
It's a heck of a value equation in these hyper-inflated times too. Think about it. At 47,000 miles it would still be in Ford's drivetrain warranty. Lol And the car actually hasn't been sat in for but a fraction of the hours of a high mileage car.
And it's BEAUTIFUL, classic Porsche.![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I told you that I was biased.

Sounds like you'd be happier with the Boxster.

Worth mentioning also that I think the 2005 Boxster's have the weaker IMS that is more susceptible to failure than in later years of the .1. It can work out to your favor though as its also replaceable unlike the later ones.

$17K for a well cared for CS would be MY choice - but I prefer the Cayman coupe looks. At that price I'd make a 90% track car of it. The PDKs are pretty bullet proof but when they go you're look at $12K +.
Is the Boxster a 5 speed - They are OK but the 6 speed is preferred IMHO. Also make sure the boxster has the IMS upgrade or plan to do the upgrade.
Either car is great - buy the one you are going to enjoy.

Thank you all for your replies, I think I am going to go with the Boxster as it is the color and the rag top I was looking for. Looks like the CS has already two more offers on it one for 19K and one higher than that.

Smart man - If you want a convertible with a stick shift then that is what you should have. I have one and I love it everytime I get in it.

I'm willing to admit that I like the lines of the Cayman over my Boxster, but that top down gear rowing flat6 singing it's song is intoxicating! It's such a great way to get where you are going.

Looks are for posers - lol. Or maybe it rains everyday where you live. Or you track it. I get that. But here in sunny CA it's top down or nuthin for my rowing machine
