Default Winter tires for Boxster in Michigan

Looking to put snow tires on my 997.2 (09 Boxster 2.9l). It currently has 18" wheels with summer tires. Wouldn't mind dropping to 17". Have a quote from TireRack that has 205/55R17 and 235/50R17 VikingContact 7 tires all on 17x7.5 Sport Cup 4 wheels with 52mm offset. I know little about offsets and aspects, but I'm concerned about the mismatched aspects and the identical width wheels. I really prefer the idea of simply swapping wheels instead of changing tires on existing wheels, but other than this $2K set it's been nigh impossible to find a reasonably priced set of wheels.
What have you folks done? And

there's usually plenty of used winter wheel/tire sets for sale in the classifieds and elsewhere, so that's a good option. I found a used 17 inch set very cheaply here on Rennlist.

Our 2009 Boxster/Caymans are 987.2

Get a set of used 17" 987 wheels and then buy the VikingContact 7's separately. You should be able to find a set super cheap, like the ones I have for sale.

TY Robert and Kris. Would love to find a used set I could just bolt on, but haven't had much luck finding a decent deal locally. Heck, the tire/wheel dealers can't find new ones! Any idea what shipping from CA to MI might run (I see a few west coast options).

I have s set of studless Blizzaks on my 987S and drive it around Anchorage Alaska on average once per week in the winter. Its the perfect combination of grip when I need it and slide when I want it. My s/o refuses to ride in it in the winter as well because of how much I enjoy sliding it, that may or may not be a benefit to you.

I have them mounted to another set of wheels to make changeover something that can be done in the garage, way worth the cost if snow shows up and your still on performance tires.

I've always had more winter bias rather than performance bias winter tires. That is to say ultimate winter traction when the snow is on the ground is more important than dry, winter performance. TO ME.

I've ran Michelin X-Ice3 on nearly all my sports cars in the winter. The snow traction borders on astonishing. On the clear, snowless road, they behave more like a luxury tire, and I'm fine with that in the winter because of rough roads caused by road heave.

I'll take the trade off of exceptional snow performance any day...because I prefer to avoid getting stuck...or worse.

I agree Suprastar. I have 17" set of VikingContact 7 tires (205/55 and 235/50) at the garage and should get the wheels today.

Kjjones,

I run Pirelli Sottozero's in the winter and they work great in the snow/ice.

KrisA,

They look nice on that car - black lug nuts? I finally received them today and will get them to the mounting guy tomorrow so now it's looking like Tuesday. May try to get more of the black out of the wheel bolt recesses if I get a chance as mine has the standard silver bolts.

Mathman,

The 210 Sottozero S2s were my 2nd choice.

At the time my factory bolts still had black plasti-dip on them. I've since removed all that and am back to stock silver bolts, rust free to boot!

I hope the plasti-dip comes out of the bolt holes easily for you. When I peeled it off the wheels were mounted on the car so I didn't really try to dig deap in there.

We got our first snow last night so I'll be swapping Michelin X-Ice Snow's onto my son's BRZ and Nokian Haka R2's onto my Golf R today.
