I would assume that this is a radio issue, but I've learned not to assume too much. Any help would be appreciated
-Radio does not work at all
-Before the scrambled LCD came up it was dark and there was a red light flashing above the push-scan button
-car is running normally, m a y b e it's turning over slowly when starting, but it's hard to say.
as a first go-round i'd get a known-to-be good battery, disconnect current battery and use jumper cables from the known-to-be-good battery to connect it temporarily and see if that helps. a lot of cars are very sensitive to low voltage batteries that are still good enough to turn over a motor... just guessing, take it for what it's worth and good luck.
BTW, i bought a CDR24 off of ebay a while ago and discovered i don't need it. if it turns out you need a new one and IF you can use it (and the second if is a BIG IF), let me know and if you can find and send me a large and sturdy enough self-enclosed envelope (joke) i'll send it to you free of charge (NOT a joke). every time i see it around here it reminds me that i've wasted money on something i didn't need in the first place...yet again. i find that annoying.

Well... the radio is now making noise, but LCD still jumbled AND... I get a PSM failure. I can't imagine that's good.
Edit, the bright red exclamation point is now lit up

if i were to now hook up my old battery and the problems reverted back to their previous state, i would suspect at least a bad battery. OTOH if the problems remained the same as they were with the new truck battery i would suspect a bad ground. assuming all other things had remained the same. and one has to honest with oneself where this is concerned, none of "...well i couldn't have affected anything with THAT small change" or "it couldn't have been that trash can i ran over the other day." kind of stuff. not that I'M the type to assume the worst in people, of course.
again, this i just bald-faced flat-out guessing on my part. ...probably worthless.
BTW, if it makes you feel any better, my panel has had the "air bag" warning light on for a couple of weeks now. i've subsequently learned to ignore it... i'm pretty sure it's because i had the temerity to actually start the car, heaven forebid (!), after i had removed the instrument cluster. either that or i moved the passenger seat too far to the rear. you never know! in any event, i'm not worried. heard tell that in order to turn off the light, i'll need to either take it to a dealer (not happn'n) or use some sort of specialized plug in tool to turn it off. we'll see. i haven't exhausted every avenue of escape that might provide an alternative to either of those unpleasant choices yet, so there is still hope.

The PSM failure warning light coming on with a battery change looks to be a somewhat common problem. It should go away when driven for a bit. We will see. In the meanwhile I'll pickup the right battery tomorrow since the one that's currently installed has been there since Nov of 2014 - that's 2 or 3 battery lives here in Florida.
Thanks for all your help and the entertaining posts.
After a battery change the head unit is acting odd - Regardless of what's on the display the radio is working and all the buttons work - however I either get the scrambled display, which changes when I change stations, or I get a normal readout, but it doesn't change when I change stations or I get a blank readout with functioning sound and buttons.
The PSM failure light went away after driving for a few miles, but now I get a system fault error with the red exclamation
...my panel has had the "air bag" warning light on for a couple of weeks now. i've subsequently learned to ignore it...
A small square of vinyl electrician's tape strategically placed on the gauge face directly over the warning light will "eliminate" that distraction until you get it reset. I had a '97 993 that threw a permanent CEL due to the dreaded SAI circuit failure and drove for three years with the CEL burning under a piece of tape. The tape was significantly cheaper than the $12,000 quoted for the top end job required to remedy the problem.
there was a time not long ago when all one knew about the radio station was the frequency and whether it was on AM/FM. and even then there were only a couple'a dots and a few numbers.. pretty vague, IMO. give it a few days, maybe it will work itself out...chin up.
