I sold my 914 after 15 years owning a completely stock 4. From the sale I bought my 06 CS for the price of an air cooled six in the 914....just the engine build.

You are better off with a used Subie transplant and keep the 9A1 in a Cayman.

i do miss the 914 though once and a while.

I also have an 06 CS and was shocked by how cheap they were. Such a bargain for the level of performance that you get. I've also had some interesting subarus including a 2.5RS coupe with an EG33 (6 cylinder from an SVX) swap in it. As fun as my subarus were, I have to say that the engines didn't have nearly the same character as the Cayman. Subaru swaps are certainly cheaper, but in reality I don't imagine that they are much less complicated than a 9A1 swap. The only thing that is probably simpler is going to be the electronic side of the conversion.

The issue I have with the 3.6l conversions is the crazy cost associated with them. I could pretty easily pick up an entire 987.2 or 981 donor car for the price of just the 3.6l engine from a 993. That doesn't include any costs to freshen it up or rebuild it. That doesn't include the 914-6 Oil tank, a 915 or G50 transmission conversion (because the 901 isn't going to be happy behind a 3.6l for long), or any of the other conversion parts required for that swap. While the 3.6l conversion isn't complicated, I think its many times more expensive than what I'm looking at for the 9A1 conversion. I realize that there are probably lots of things that I've not considered for the 9A1 swap (hence why I'm here posting) but I think it has a real possibility to provide an awesome, modern powertrain with power levels at or above that of the best NA aircooleds out there AND at a price much lower than one of the big aircooled conversions. Yes, I could also stuff an LS V8 in the back but that goes against my inner purist who tells me that I need to keep this thing Porsche powered.
Ok, so I get your reasoning and I definitely understand the desire to keep the drive train Porsche. I'd actually suggest you consider for 2.9l 9A1 as the donor; it will make plenty of power -- 265hp?. The 2.9 is not DI and has somewhat simpler electronics; in any case, you will still need the dash module. In the same vein of keeping things simple: have you considered a M96/7? Since you'd have it out for the swap addressing the IMS would be a simple matter. Electrics on the M96/7 are even more straight forward than the 2.9 9A1.

Cheers,
DJM

A 2.9l is actually a great idea. Its actually what got me thinking about the whole 9A1 idea. There was a motor for sale near me that was so cheap I just about bought it. Then I started thinking about all of the electronic components that I'd need to source and that's what got me thinking about the whole donor car idea. I agree that 265hp would probably be more than enough in a 914. I may still go that route in order to simplify things a bit.
I have also thought about the M96/7 engines but just feel that the whole IMS issue isn't something that I want hanging over this build. I already worry about the M97 weaknesses with my 06 CS and would like to move on to a 9A1 if possible in order to get away from those worries. I've also heard that the M96/7 is wider and interferes more with the suspension mounting points of the 914. That being said, there are a couple 914s that have had that swap so I wouldn't be blazing a completely new trail.

Beschleunigt,
Take a look at this thread; this is the guy who swapped the 9A1 into his 987.1 chassis. I suspect he can give you a lot of helpful pointers if you decided to pursue this route!

DJM
