Default Front subframe torque specs

Hi all, I'm in the process of installing the x73 kit and have the front subframe hanging for the front sway bar. I can't find the torque specs for the subframe anywhere. Anyone have this info?

I'm going to document the **** out of every torque spec i can find. So frustrating.

Thanks!

Sorry, but there is no sway bar in the repair manual. No subframe either. I searched. The word Sway is not used, although bar and Frame is.

I can never find what I'm looking for either.

Tighten until you almost break the bolts, but not quite...

*probably* conservative to assume Grade 5 bolts, and A36 structural steel for mating threads. Use 6061-T6 if female thread is aluminum. Use maximum torque if you don't expect to remove them again, and "recommended" torque if you know they'll be removed/replaced again.

OK, I found anti-roll bar in the manual. The connecting link (suspension /stabilizer) to anti-roll bar is a M10 x 1.5 collar nut (always use new) torque = 30 ft/lb
The Anti-roll bar clamp to front-axle cross member is a M10 x 60 hex head bolt + nut, torque = 48 ft/lb

Good luck. Are you following any instructions for the DIY X73 install? If so, please share! I may be doing this too in a few months and would like to see what I’m getting in to on the 981.

I found that section in the repair manual as well in the steering gear section. I was at first thinking that it only described the bolts/nuts along the front of the subframe since it says to "outer front body No. 5"" and "inner front body" which makes sense. The outers are the ones that go through the diagonal arms and the inner and are on the inside. I guess the four big bolts, two on each side of the car, on the rear of the subframe are the ones mentioned "to center front of body No. 6"? There is no picture to reference was No. 6 is. These four were my hang up, but i guess i'll just do the same 90Nm + 90. This section also describes a "support frame" in the text, not in a chart, that should be 65 Nm. I think that is the black steel support frame under there that holds up the gas tank.

Here's my interpretation:

Front of subframe from outside to inside:
Long bolts that go through diagonal arms: 90Nm + 180deg
Nuts that go onto the studs in the body: 90Nm + 90deg
Bolts toward the center: 90Nm + 90deg

Back of subframe:
Four big bolts, two on each side: 90Nm + 90deg. (this is what i'm unsure of)

Black steel support piece:
nuts and bolts: 65Nm

Steering rack bolts: 70Nm

This should help:Tightening torques and torque angle:

Front-axle cross member -2- with longitudinal arm (diagonal arm) on outer front body -5-

Tightening torque + torque angle 90 Nm (67 ftlb.) +180 degrees

Front-axle cross member -2- on inner front body -5-

Tightening torque + torque angle 90 Nm (67 ftlb.) +90 degrees

Stud on front body for lock nut -6-

Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 ftlb.)

Front-axle cross member -2- on centre front body
-6- Tightening torque + torque angle 90 Nm (67 ftlb.) +90 degrees

Steering gear fastening screws Tightening torque 70 Nm (52 ftlb.)

Mounting for front-axle cross member (picture similar / longitudinal support no. 1 not shown)

Lower intermediate steering shaft (universal joint) to steering gear

Tightening torque + torque angle 20 Nm (15 ftlb.) +90 degrees

Tie-rod ball on wheel carrier Tightening torque 85 Nm (63 ftlb.)

Tank tray restraining straps to body (M8 screws) = 23 Nm

Mounting for -2- supporting frame -1-

Coolant pipes to subframe -3-

Interesting, so that doesn’t cover the four rear bolts. They remain a mystery!

ill prob just do the same 90nm plus 90deg

I see what you are saying. I did the 67 plus 90 degrees on those four bolts as well. The only one that is plus 180 degrees is the lateral arm to body through bolt as they are much longer. Hope that helps.
