Default Anybody uses 5w30 oil?

Hi guys.
My cayman's mileage (2.9 engine) is 35k miles. I use Mobil1 0w20. But this oil is basically colored water, it's extremely thin and liquid. But dealers advice to use 0w20 (ecology crap)

here's the question. What oil thickness would it be safer to use on 9A1? Is it possible to use 5w30? I don't trust modern oils cuz it's just business, nothing personal.

Neither the 5W30 or the 0W20 vicosities should be used in your car. Why are you using the wrong oil?

Use a Porsche approved A40 oil in the proper viscosity (0W40, 5W40, or 5W50).

This is old but you get the idea- oil manufacturers will put A40 on the bottle.

Got this info. about oil weights from a respected GearHead friend.

Also keep in mind that for track days many recommend 15w50.

I'm thinking about going up to 5w50 for the next oil change. Just to see if it doesn't help quite the valve train a little bit.
Not sure why 10w40 should be excluded as an option.

Guess the big message is, we have options and not to take the the 0w40 as an absolute mandate.

Maybe the guys from LN Engineering can provide some input. Mr. Navarro? Paging...

Hmmm, I think you should reconsider that position.

The contemporary synthetic oils are FAR SUPERIOR to the oils of yester-year.
And there's many brands to choose from.. Mobile-1, Castrol, Pennzoil, Driven, RedLine, Liqui Molly, Amsoil
Any of 'em would do just fine.

Just get off that 0w20 nonsense and your engine will love you for it.

Good luck.

Can't be bothered to read manual? Fun to post a question to random strangers on a forum? I dunno - this always confuses me. But my kids always laugh at me for reading manuals, especially fat ones which get me very excited.

Yes. Most folks prefer 5w50 M1 for track because viscosity holds up better at high temps (250F+). Please get that 0w20 out of your engine and never let whoever suggested that touch the car again.

Whatever dealer you are taking your car to doesn't know what they are doing. Never should a 0w20 or even a 30 wt be used in your Cayman.

The factory has a large selection of 0w40 and 5w40 viscosities, and the latter should be used unless you are in the arctic circle.

M1 5w50 would certainly be an upgrade over the 0w40, but there are plenty more choices better, especially if you plan on tracking the car.

If your owners manual says that it is OK then it is OK. What more information do you need? I'm only a neurosurgeon by trade.

Wow! What kind of Porsche dealer would push for the wrong kind of motor oil?

To the OP, hope you kept the invoices
