Default 987.2 Exhaust hack - possible?

Hi guys,
Found thread https://www.planet-9.com/threads/pic....155769/page-4
about exhaust hack on 981 2.7, liked the sound a lot, catalytic converters stay untouched as well.

is it possible to do such (or something alike) exhaust hack on 987.2 2.9? Heard about some exhaust hacks on 986 though.

This is basically a Carnewal GT exhaust but done on your own. I wouldn't recommend cutting a rectangle like that and would do it the way the Carnewal GT is done. What are you looking to achieve by doing this?

I have one on my 987.2 2.9 and it gives you a little bit more of a metal tone to it. Here's a link to where I bought mine.

How is that done? Gert made mine but he was not willing to disclosure the details.
So I just got back a soldered muffler but I have no clue of what he did.

TIG welding! Clean the metal carefully, fit it carefully and spot weld it. Then do an inch or so at a time, alternating where you weld. Stainless is actually the easiest to weld but it really needs to be purged so you get good penetration and a smooth bead. MIG will work if you think pigeon **** looks good on your muffler? Plus no sparks with TIG for not setting fire to your shop.

does anybody have a shot of the cuts on a 987.1 muffler?

That's a great question as I honestly have no idea what he does either. The exterior of the 981 exhaust looks different then the 987.2 exhaust so the internals may be different as well. It looks like they cut around the cylindrical part and then likely hollowed out the inside and then welded them back together.

Default Hack

From my experience, while a diy’er with knowledge and equipment can do this to their own degree of satisfaction (not me personally), an “exchange” with Gert is worth a serious consideration with minimum “down time.”

Last but not least with the Carnewal mod I was expecting a much stronger effect, but I understood that with the 987.2 you cannot have too much in this way because of how the exhaust is designed.

Default 997.2

Concur- not the same dramatic sound effect as on my former 911s and where the big sound and grin increase can be experienced is with headers and 200 cell cats (but not cheaply).....

Gentlemen, I've grown weary of this entire Modification Mystery.

I definitely consider Welding to be one of the higher ART Forms of Civilization.
I completely understand that the folks that do this mod are conducting a busine$$, but there's only three of them in the ENTIRE WORLD. ONLY 3!
I'm sure doing business with them is a great experience (nobody has said otherwise) but doing all this shipping back and forth takes TIME and is less than optimal from an ecological standpoint.

I think this job is far more ART than it is science.
N' I have NO DOUBT that any true Performance Exhaust Professional can apply their own expertise and experience to modifying the internals of this muffler for the best possible/desired result.

Ok, so where exactly does Carnewal make the cut?

Could someone at least indicate where Carnewal makes the cuts on the muffler?
I'm not asking what changes were made internally, just where they made the cuts.

What does that mean exactly relative to this picture?

Thanks!

Here you can see it pretty well.
Look at the round welding on the upper part where each side of the exhaust has a funnel shape.

The funnel cut is to remove the cats. There should be another cut on the can where the internal pipe was modified.

I could be wrong but in the 987.2 I read there are no cat in the muffler (that is the main difference with the 9871 exhaust and that is why the 987.2 carnewal mod is not effective as in the 987.1).

Logical but it makes no sense to cut the funnel where the cats live on earlier models, if there is no cat in there. I’m going to cut my 987.1 muffler and do the Carnewal mod then TIG weld it back together. If I can get the old one off the car and if Soul coughs up the new tips.

This is what held me back on the Carnewal GT Exhaust for my 987.2. Am stil toying around with the 200 cell headers from Carnewal as I think for the 987.2, it'll add the requested sound plus a tad more power. But yes, not cheap for that less than 10 bhp at the wheels.
