I was just pondering why, when Spyders are discussed, it always seems to be the 987.2 Spyder and the later versions - the ones with manual cloth tent-roofs instead of a motorized fabric roof. Not the 2008 model. So I checked my original documents and, yes, Porsche refers to the 2008 car consistently as an RS60 Spyder.
Clearly, Porsche itself being the arbiter of what's what with its cars, the 2008 RS60 Spyder is ... a Spyder.
But that brings up the next thought. Namely that the RS60 Spyder has precisely the same roof as a Boxster S. And more to the point, it IS a Boxster S with lots of option boxes ticked.
Having therefore determined that those Boxsters with a tent top AND this Boxster with an auto top are Spyders, can we not as a follow-on conclude that ALL Boxsters are Spyders ...
?
Yes, the term has been used for convertible VARIANT of the standard. The Boxster is ONLY a convertible so Spyder is a option package not a variant (for example there is no Cayman Spyder)
I took it as the top needs to be a pup tent kind of structure. The top for a 987 was called a sun shield. Two truths; it’s not a pita to put up or take down the 987 sun shield and the op is correct they’re all Spyders. Lastly the RS60 is a great car that can be had for a bargain.
As a previous Alfa Romeo Spider owner now Boxster I consider all two seater roadsters a Spider or Spyder in Porsche's nomenclature. Not sure why it's different Porsche?
