I'm ready to do a full exterior detailing of my car for the first time since I got it this weekend. This is a 987.1 base model. Should the exhaust tip be shiny chrome or some sort of duller grey-like color? Don't want to go after it too aggressively if it isn't supposed to be your typical shiny chrome finish. Thanks.

My vote is shiny. I don't know what color the exterior of your car is, but irrespective I always say shiny for the simple reason that you want your tip(s) to be visible IMO, you want it/them to stand out. Be proud of your tips, guys! LOL Black tip(s) can get lost (particular on a car with a black rear diffuser/bumper). My $0.02.
Not the best comparison shot, but one car with chrome and one with black tips:
Just look at those babies!
Good luck with your exterior detail. Let us know where you end up with the tip and post a pic if you can.
Here’s a tip to keep the chrome perfect going forward, do a quick wipe down of the tops after every couple of drives. The soot will easily wipe off and the chrome tips stay shiny.

Good point, and I realize now why I prefer black; to tone down the looks and to be as stealthy as possible.
If that's something you can really do in a white Porsche...
I recently went through the same detailing, used Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish, as it was readily available at local auto parts stores. Good results, cleaned up pretty nicely.
There is hope, just will take a little polish/cleaning. I believe the natural state for the stock exhaust tips on our 987.1 cars is a kinda brushed nickel look vs highly polished chrome.
So i detailed the car last weekend. The verdict for the exhaust tip is that it's really more of a brushed nickel surface finish than a shiny chrome. Much better than it was... but not quite perfect.
