I recently inherited a beautiful ‘08 Cayman 987 Tiptronic.
On our journey across the country to its new home in Colorado, I got a “Tiptronic Emergency Run” fault, forcing me into limp mode. Side note: it was raining very hard when I got the error.
I took it to a Porsche Dealer, and $200 later they sent me on my way after clearing the code and finding nothing else wrong.
The next day the fault happened again so I limped it to the nearest auto parts store to get an OBD reader. After clearing the error, no more problems.
So here’s where I’m at now:
-The P0706 error occurs shifting into D upon startup, forcing the car into limp mode.
-I can clear the code with the OBD reader
-The car then drives and shifts normally until 24hours have passed (manual mode works fine as well)
-I cannot start the car in R or D
Anyone have any ideas? Ideally I’d love to fix this myself, or at a minimum be knowledgeable when I take it into a shop.
Ironically I purchased an 07' Cayman S with tiptronic same as yours the same day you posted this on 6-21-19. Wife and I drove it back from NC to Florida and it drove fine. Only issue was TPMS indicator light. Checked pressures, light still on but would address later. So three days later wife is driving the car and the same "tiptronic emergency run" fault light, engine light, and running limp mode with gear "4" flashing light just like you got there. I checked fuses (good), then checked with scan tool and found P0706 code and attempted clearing code. Code was eliminated but came right back after reset so this seems to be a hard fault. Called the dealer where bought and he wanted me to disconnect battery completely and reset. I decided against that as I wanted Porsche shop to check this out and fix. I felt they need to see codes unmolested to determine problem and fix. They found a faulty "multi switch" (don't have PN yet but I will get it) for transmission shifter. As of this writing, work has not been performed to determine if this is a permanent solution yet but will keep informed.
I would take the car back to the shop you had taken before to find out why they didn't fix the problem. The diagnostic equipment they have I understand is a lot more sophisticated than what you can get at autozone. Good luck!
Congrats on your new Cayman, and thanks for responding. It sounds very similar to my situation. I got the P0706 error a few more times, cleared each time with my OBD reader. It seems that if I shift into D (or M) too quickly after turning the car on it triggers the fault. Since I figured that out I haven't had a problem.
The Porsche dealer I took it to updated the Tiptronic software, inspected the wiring for damage, and drove the car around. The error didn't happen again until later.
I recently bought a 2008 Cayman S, (25k kms on the clock) the car is nice on every way, since I got it I immediately changed: Battery, Oil, All Filters, Brake fluid, Trans Fluid, brake pads and Sound System (Spent almost 2k) but from time to time I get this message "Tiptronic emergency run" and screws my Day, if I turn off the car and remove the key the issue goes away, but after a few days it comes back again, there is no leak, and the battery is new, someone told me is the tiptronic module and the stick, I´m afraid this is going to cost me a Lot. Does anyone have an idea on what´s going on?... It seems that buying used cars isnt such a good idea.

Had a buddy with a similar Tiptronic problem. Ended up being the linkage in the gear shifter was broken. He found a good Porsche shop and they fixed the problem. Wasn't too expensive for the repair.
Hi B3FREAK, thanks for your reply, this is what I did, since every independent shop were guessing (each a different story) I took courage and went to Porsche Center here in Panama City, to my surprise they were extremely kind to me (I guess Covid-19 has affected them too) long story short, the checked the car and asked me some questions, the next day they told me that the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION GEAR POSITION SENSOR PART# 986 325 612 01 needed to be replaced, for $650 bucks my issue is gone. Thanks again!

I'd pay the money and move on with life... meaning... go out and enjoy that car!
