Default Hawk HB289F.610 pads too small

I did a search in " Porsche Cayman & Cayman S all generations " for "Hawk" and didn't see this issue. Short story: My front Hawk pads are too small compared to the pads in the car, but match the size dimensions on the Hawk web page. Any tips for getting the right size Hawk HPS front pads for a 2008 Cayman S? Since I already have Hawk HPS installed in the back I'm hoping to stick with Hawk HPS for the front. If I have to go to another brand of pad, any suggestions for the best match to having Hawk HPS in the back?

Longer story: I have done brakes many times on many cars, and have done track days and many autocrosses. On another car, the track days have boiled Motul brake fluid, but not Castrol SRF. Brakes and disks needed replacing each track day until I did brake air ducts. So that was a long way to say I have some clue what I'm doing. Then we bought a 2008 Cayman S that has done a bit of autocrossing so far. It is a great car! I just did brakes on the car. Based on my past experience and recommendations I read online I went with Hawk HPS brakes; the car will be street driven and autocrossed but not the big track. The rears went on great. The front pads that came out are about a centimeter longer and a centimeter wider than the new pads. The retaining pin misses the hole by about 1/2 of the hole width. I have the right part number per Tire Rack, where I bought them, and per the Hawk web page. The pads match the size of the CAD image on the Hawk web page. http://www.hawkperformance.com/perfo...pads/hb289f610

We bought the car used, but that I can tell it is bone stock. I seriously doubt the caliper was switched for a bigger one. The front and rear calipers look very similar.

Many thanks for the help!

Left is original pad, right is clearly smaller new Hawk HPS pad

New pad on top of old pad shows it is smaller

Pin can't go through pad hole

I used HB550F.634 on the front when I did the brakes. it went on with no issues. I also never install those silly pad dampers. they completely contradict the concept of racing brakes: the ability to change pad at the track without removing the calipers.

I looked at the Hawk data referenced and noticed that the pad is supposed to fit both the Base Cayman as well as the Cayman S. Having owned and tracked both models, I do not believe that the front brakes are the same size. I did run Hawk pads on the base, switched to PFC for the S.

Thumbs up

Many thanks Bill Lehman and planolemans, this looks like it answers my dilemma. Here are the links for the Hawk *610 vs. *634:

http://www.hawkperformance.com/perfo...pads/hb289f610
http://www.hawkperformance.com/perfo...pads/hb664f634

The *634 is a bit bigger than the *610 and looks like it will be a perfect fit. The *610 is listed for the 2007 and 2008 Cayman S. The *634 is listed for years 2008 through 2012 Cayman S. My guess is perhaps there was a mid-year change in 2008.

If you have a 2008 Cayman S, beware! I'd suggest looking at the size of the pads in the links above and make sure you order the right size. If I put 2008 Porsche Cayman S in http://www.tirerack.com , it gives the *610 brakes which are wrong for my car (but might be right for earlier in the model year). If I do 2009 instead, it'll correctly give the *634 brakes. I hit a similar thing on the Hawk web site!

For future shopping, try :

http://hawkbrakesdirect.com

I found their prices to be better. They offer sales and discounts frequently.

I also found their site to be more informative regarding fitments and applications.

I've been running HPS+ on my Cayman for track use. Great modulation, great bite.
Enough torque to lock the tires anytime I want to, last a long time and have never faded once.

i've been running DTC-60 on the track. Very happy with them. Only issue the dust is hard to clean especially if it gets wet.

Try autoanything.com for even better price on Hawks.
