Default New 718 Boxster S Owner - Drove it, Bought it

OK...I Know... I've read about the H6 and how sweet it sounds compared to the 719. And you know what? I've driven several. My sister has a 12 911 S and I've driven that a lot. I will tell you that the 2017 718 S is a great car. I want on a test drive a few weeks ago and bought it (718 S, guards red, 20" carrera wheels and best of all a proper manual). Yes, the PDK is nice, but not involving. Say what you want about Porsche changing the motor to 4 cylinders and putting a turbo on it, but I will tell you that it is one torquey motor and useful pretty much everywhere and on the boil it's really something -- a HUGE improvement from the 16 S -- much more powerful. Like I said in the title, I drove it and I bought it. If you have not yet driven it, I suggest doing so. Or as Ferris Bueller said (even though it was about a Ferrari...), "It is so choice, if you have the means I highly recommend you picking it up." The 718 S really is choice.

Congrats, welcome to the forum and to Porsche ownership.

Proofread. Proofreading is always a good thing.

Good for you! It would be fun to see pics and build. I've been thinking of this rather than chasing a '16 Spyder.

Glad to hear you were so impressed with it! I'm sure it looks stunning in Guards. Dying to drive one. Looking forward to more feedback and driving impressions in the future. Enjoy and congrats

I drove one the other day, there's def. torque, the car feels way faster than a 981 3.4 Boxster S, but didn't like the sound. I'm glad I have my spyder! ;-)

The new PCM is so good! I wanna know how to retro fit this unit!

Question is were they dealing? I haven't seen any move off my local dealer's lot.

In the past I owned a 986S and a 987S. Then I received a letter from Porsche and I received the opportunity of driving for an extensive test a 718S and a 718.
I drove both and not just for a spin around the corner. Great cars, but even if similar on paper, in reality the 718S is a completely different car. A lot of torque at low rpm, the PDK with sport chrono is a good match for this engine and the performances are up to a 2005 super car. However.... at the end of the tests I talked to the dealer and I bought one of the last 981S. I love normally aspirated flat six and its sound when it revs to heaven :-)

My dealer sold several last week and yes, I had no trouble negotiating a discount on the 718 I configured and ordered.

Glad to read this! Those have been my thoughts as well. The 718 is awesome and the 718 S is very, very impressive!

How would you describe the sound?

This is the question is it not?

Most of the reviewers are disapponted with the sound...but not all. For me it is hard to tell from a utube video.

We passed a 718 in our 2011 Boxster S. People on this board wanted to know how it sounded. We were on a winding 2 lane mountain road. 718 wa going uphill we were going down. We had the top own. Neither of us were driving in anger. But we could not hear the 718 at all. We have a sports exhaust which makes the exhaust sportier and louder than when the baffles remain closed.

I love our Boxster S. It is a true drivers car and we have a manual transmission. Not as fast as PDK but more engaging. Plus my bride will only drive a mt.

Really don't think Pcars sound all that great anyway except when guys are running straight pipes or high flow cats or some other after market setup.

The 2011 Boxster S is the quietest of our cars even with the sports exhaust engaged at full throttle. That does not mean it is not a fun car to drive especially in the twisties. Looking forward to hearing the 718 in person but am not expecting to be favoably impressed.

Seeing many 718 commercials on tv lately. They never mention it is a turbo and the background music is so loud l really can't hear the exhaust. That speaks volumes but l wish we could hear the car.

Who's put one on track? How is modulation of throttle under max grip situations? How easy is it to balance the car with the throttle?

This is the one issue I have with turbos... (Well other than heat soak... But Porsche 911 turbo seem to do well there) is throttle linearity for car control at the limit.
