Caymen R vs. Spyder?
I have no idea about either car.
Is the spyder a topless Caymen R?
Could anybody tell me the differences between the two and what are the dry weights of both cars in PDK trim?
Engine?
Doors?
Brakes?
etc?
I got the itch to build something....

Boxster Spyder was first out of the gate with an uprated suspension and significant weight reduction. The CR shares the same setup.
They both have aluminum door skins a la GT3.
They both have 10 HP more than their S model equivalents. (320 Spyder, 330 CR)
They both offered GT2 sport buckets standard which offers huge weight saving.
They both use newly designed lightweight factory 19" wheels 8.5J front 10J rear. No other factory wheelset is as light as these.
They both use a slightly larger exhaust pipe diameter than S model.
They both use sport pads on the brakes but the calipers and rotors are identical to the S version Brembos.
Finally, both cars were developed in a program managed by Jan Roth, who also oversaw the latest 2014 Cayman program.
Spyder PDK 2866 lbs curb weight.
Cayman R PDK 2910 lbs curb weight.

Would you know if the 997.1GT3 (non RS) wheels and brakes fit on these things?

From my limited investigation of exactly that mod, I believe you have to change the uprights.
The 996 GT3 brakes should work as a direct bolt-on.
The 997 GT3 added a much wider annulus rotor, and so the mounting geometry requires a newer upright and probably new struts as well.

The purchase price and operating cost of a Caymen R/Spyder is very doable.
The balance/characteristics of a light weight mid engine car is also hard to resist.
With PDK and a 3.8L it would be a killer track day car and street rod for quick runs to the grocery store.
My thoughts are either a PDK Caymen R stripped with 3.8L and Cup wing or a PDK Spyder stripped with Carrera GT seats and a 3.8L (think LiL' Bastard)
Car would be for Vancouver area. Thus wouldnt need a roll cage as such, but would want it a la' hotrod for occasional street use and ORP, PIR, RIDGE track days. (RS stays in florida for Sebring flings)
Getting my wish list together in terms of brakes, suspension, wheels etc..
My Shelby GT500 is for sale to make room for this little stinker project....
