Default How Many Guys Running BMC Filters?

I have a couple questions for you.
1) Did you have any problems with your MAF sensor?
2) Did it audibly change the volume of the intake?
3) Is it a DIY type of install?
4) How much are they for the 987S?

2) You should not; Same arguments on 986
3) Yes, but R/R of the air filter is a PITA
4) About $120 to $130 delivered depending on if you pay tax (make me an offer)

Here's a pic of the 987 airbox and stock air filter. You can see the filter is huge compared to the 986 one and completely fills that side of the engine compartment. Also, you can see the filter is a very tight fit to get it inside the airbox. It's pretty much impossible to do without kinking the pleats. On the right side, there is a black screw on the top. Basically, you undo that screw which attaches a large L-shaped plate that is separately screwed onto the end of the filter. Then both slide towards the front of the car, and you carefully wiggle/bend the air filter slightly to get it out. On the far side of the filter in the picture (outside), there is a water (?) shield that is also part of the L-shaped piece described above. Directly behind that is a large snorkel. Then, from the body side, there is a grill and baffle. Without the baffle behind the grill and by modifying that L-shaped piece above, the air filter is basically a straight-shot through to the outside. Finally, at the rear of the airbox, you can see that there is a very nice tapered transition section which reduces down and connects to the air intake pipe.

Hope this helps you out. Except for changing the air filter (and some of the dorky baffles), it's a great design. It's also a shoehorn fit in the engine compartment which requires darn near dropping the engine to remove the airbox. It's at least 50% longer than a 986 airbox.

How do you get the engine compartment opened? And which tools are required? Is there ANY WAY a 986 style Evo Intake can be modified with it's cone style filter to fit the 987? My shop guy thinks he can although this is without having had seen the engine compartment first. If you go on S Car Go racings website they have the Carbon Plenum that I love so much. Since you have first hand seen the intake of the987, do you think the Carbon Plenum and Cone Filter from S Car Go racing would fit with simple modification (maybe just using a rubber connector somewhere.

One of the problems with the S-Car-Go intake (several 3rd hand posts; no personal experience) is that the cross section of the intake pipe at the MAF sensor is larger. Therefore, the MAF reads a lower flow volume and always runs lean/crappy and/or causes CELs. People have either had to get custom programmed ECUs with mixed results or yank the S-Car-Go intake out and go back to stock or Evo. It is really a racing intake not suitable for the street. The MAF diameter is a critical point in the intake. The 987 uses a different MAF piece/tube than the 986 so I don't know if the diameter is any different. If it is different, then the factory has obviously compensated for it in the ECU maps. You could wind up with something nobody has an ECU tune for.

Any 986 airbox intake will not work with the 987 because the intake manifolds is different. The throttle body is located about 1 foot out so as a minimum you will have to do some sort of creative coupling/connecting. BUT, there is no reason to do so as I have indicated because the 987 airbox is superior to the Evo. The 987 airfilter is probably twice the size of a cone filter. In the picture above, the air filter is a large oval filter. By putting in a cone filter, you are reducing the surface area by about 50% because the limitation is the filter width which is why Porsche made the 987 filter oval.

P.S. Getting to the engine compartment should be in the manual. Piece of cake (<1 minute) after you've done it a few times. The only tools are your fingers.
